LAS VEGAS—Before the action of the 2011 Hospitality Design Exposition & Conference (The HD Expo) officially begins on May 18, industry leaders will gather a day early for HD Green Day (May 17) to discuss socially responsible, ethical and eco-friendly practices within the world of hospitality design. Presented by Hospitality Design magazine and produced by the Hospitality Design Group, both events will take place at the Sands Expo and Convention Center in Las Vegas.

“Sustainable design is a growing area of the hospitality world, not only for functional reasons but for the aesthetics of the designs as well,” said Elizabeth Sommerville, group show director for Nielsen Exposition’s Hospitality Design Group. “We are proud to host such innovative companies and professionals as they share ideas that are helping shape the future of this industry.”

One of the major highlights during HD Green Day will be keynote speaker Michael Jantzen, an internationally-renowned American artist and designer best known for his commitment to merge art, architecture, technology and sustainable design into one unique experience. Other notable speakers will be William G. Langmade, LEED AP, president of Purchasing Management International, L.P., and Sara Schoen, hospitality sector manager of the U.S. Green Building Council. Attendees will come to discuss future trends and build their network of like-minded industry associates.

Earth-Minded Awards

Additionally, Hospitality Design magazine and the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) will recognize innovative achievements with the 2011 Earth-Minded Awards for hospitality projects and products. Interior designers, architects, owners, and manufacturers were invited to enter projects and products showcasing sustainable design such as material selection, resource efficiency, environmental management systems or overall product design.

Hospitality Design and ASID will also honor an interior design or architecture student who has achieved sustainable innovation in a student hospitality design project with the Earth-Minded Award for Tomorrow. Winners of the awards will be selected by a panel of distinguished industry professionals and will be recognized at the Hospitality Design Green Day Luncheon on May 17.

Co-located with HD Green Day, HD Expo is expected to draw more than 7,000 attendees to view the wares of more than 900 exhibitors from across the globe. Attendees of the HD Green Day will receive continuing education credits—three hours (0.3 CEU) for licensed interior designers and 3.0 LU HSW SD for architects.
