The year was 1989 and it was my first experience visiting the International Hotel/Motel & Restaurant Show (now called HX: The Hotel Experience (HX) and paired with Boutique Design New York (BDNY) at the Javits Center in New York City.) I was a much younger editor with Hotel & Motel Management magazine then and did journalism the old-fashioned way—taking photos using Polaroid Instant Cameras and standing there with the suppliers waiting for the photos to develop, writing articles on ancient, slow computers in the press room, and physically taking the pages for the daily show edition to the printer. Vendors would hire dancing girls to attract men to their booths and you could fill your belly by grazing the many aisles of food products on the south side of the show. Every college or university with a hospitality program would be there and the show took up two floors of the Javits. My, how times have changed—for the better in some ways.

I have great memories of the many Javits shows I attended over the years and will be attending the HX, and Boutique Design New York (BDNY) shows November 13 & 14. I highlighted the educational sessions in a previous column.

I will be there to attend sessions and to visit with green suppliers—show veterans and new ones—and will be reporting on my experiences here after the event.

For a hotelier, meeting the right supplier can mean an incredible amount of energy, water, or waste savings—adding up to increased profitability.

I took a glance at the exhibitor lists of HX and BDNY and here is just a small sample of companies that will be exhibiting their green products and services.

At HX: The Hotel Experience

CleanBrands, LLC—CleanBrands is a provider of mattress, box spring and pillow encasements that extend the life of the items they cover while keeping guests protected from dust mites, bed bugs, viruses, and more.

Hawaiian Paradise Coffee—Hawaii’s largest food-service coffee roaster by volume, Hawaiian Paradise Coffee is Rainforest Alliance Certified and comes packaged by box, bag, and K-Cups.

Navien Inc.—Navien will be at the show with its tankless water heaters. Up to 32 units can be grouped together for commercial applications. Water is only heated and provided as needed.

Priority Bicycles—Recently featured on Green Lodging News, Priority Bicycles offers a wide range of bicycles for a lending program, including the Current e-bike.

Emerson Electric Co.—Emerson Electric’s Verdant will showcase its guestroom energy management system products including its easy-to-install thermostat with a built-in motion sensor. The Verdant system offers potential guestroom energy management savings of from 40 to 50 percent.

At Boutique Design New York

Valley Forge Fabrics Inc.—Valley Forge Fabrics will introduce its new SEAQUAL MARINE PLASTIC collection. This large collection of unique upholstery textures includes almost 100 items and are woven with SEAQUAL YARN made from reclaimed plastics from marine and coastal areas.

Rentokil Initial plc—Rentokil Initial’s Ambius will feature its interior plants and green wall services. Ambius is a certified specifier, installer, and service provider for a wide range of green wall systems.

Gilchrist & Soames—Gilchrist & Soames will highlight its amenity dispenser option to reduce single-use plastic waste and feature its green lifestyle collections including BeeKind, Clean the World, and EarthTempo.

Milliken Hospitality—Milliken Hospitality will offer its many carpet options including the Arboreal Collection. It was designed to express how nature makes us feel—relaxed, grounded, secure, and full of life. Milliken explored the textures and lines of plants and trees to create serene patterns for hospitality interiors.

Rustbelt Reclamation—Rustbelt Reclamation will be at BDNY with its quality custom furniture made from local and unique material. The company is woman owned and operated and offers a tree-to-table program for clients who want to re-purpose existing logs from their property.

If you will be attending or exhibiting at HX or BDNY and wish to chat about the sustainability of your products or services, let me know. I would be happy to meet with you or stop by. I can be reached at greenlodgingnews@gmail.com.

Looking for Guest Columnists

Every two weeks Green Lodging News posts a new guest column on its website. (Click here for examples.) The guest column also appears in the weekly e-newsletter. Green Lodging News is currently in need of industry experts to contribute occasional guest columns. Experts may include consultants, architects, designers, suppliers, and those who own or operate green lodging establishments. Columns may be articles that take a stance on a particular subject or be strictly educational in nature. Columnists benefit by having their photo included along with a one paragraph description of their company. Interested in writing a column? Get in the Green Suppliers Spotlight!

Green Lodging News, lodging’s leading environmental news source, publishes Green Suppliers Spotlight, an e-blast to 19,372 subscribers that features the lodging industry’s leading green products and services. The e-blast features multiple vendors—unlike the current Green Supplier Spotlight that allows one supplier to “own” the Green Lodging News subscriber list for one e-blast. (Click here for a Green Suppliers Spotlight sample.)

Green Suppliers Spotlight is published weekly on Thursdays to general managers, owners, management companies, directors of sustainability, directors of engineering, facilities managers and many others who are either in purchasing positions or who influence purchasing decisions. Suppliers of green products and services throughout North America and beyond are invited to participate in the e-blast. (Minimum two suppliers per e-blast.) Green Suppliers Spotlight was created to give vendors an opportunity to reach a high number of industry purchasers at a very low cost—as low as $200 per e-mail. (Click here for rate sheet.)

Those advertising in Green Suppliers Spotlight can include up to 100 words, one image, contact information and multiple links to their website in their ad. At the end of each week, a report will be sent to each supplier with information on delivered e-mails, opens and click-throughs.
