ANAHEIM, CALIF.—The Anaheim Convention Center, the largest convention center on the west coast, was recently awarded the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification, and is one of only 14 convention centers in the country to earn this distinction. LEED is the lead rating system of the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) for designing, constructing and operating the world’s greenest, most energy efficient, and high performing buildings.

“The Anaheim Convention Center continues to remain current, and we are very pleased with the LEED certification awarded to the Convention Center,” said City of Anaheim Mayor Curt Pringle. “Upgrades to and expansion of the Convention Center has always been a priority for the City of Anaheim. Coupled with the LEED certification, we are confident Anaheim will remain a top choice for the convention industry.”

The 1.6 million-square-foot Anaheim Convention Center is the cornerstone of Anaheim and Orange County’s convention, event and meeting business. The facility opened in July of 1967, and since that time has experienced five major expansions. During its 40 plus years, it has hosted major entertainment, political, and sporting events, as well as thousands of conventions, trade shows, and special events. It is an Anaheim landmark and a vital part of the city’s visitor industry.

Continued Focus on Sustainability

“Our staff is very proud to have earned LEED certification and is committed to moving this program forward,” said Tom Morton, executive director Convention, Sports and Entertainment for the City of Anaheim. “We will continue to implement sustainable procedures throughout Anaheim Convention Center facility operations today and in the future.”

“The Anaheim Convention Center’s LEED certification demonstrates tremendous green leadership,” said Rick Fedrizzi, president, CEO & founding chair, U.S. Green Building Council.

The LEED Green Building Rating System is a feature-oriented rating system that awards buildings points for satisfying specified green building criteria. The USGBC is a nonprofit membership organization whose vision is a sustainable built environment within a generation. Its membership includes corporations, builders, universities, government agencies, and other nonprofit organizations.
