CRANBERRY TOWNSHIP, PA.—Allegheny Printed Plastics is introducing biodegradable plastic cards as part of an ongoing commitment to provide more environmentally friendly product alternatives. The biodegradable PVC core card stock and laminate material perform just like standard plastic and is ideal for many common card applications.

The biodegradation process begins when the product is introduced into a fertile environment (soil, water, compost, or wherever microorganisms are present) and works in both aerobic and anaerobic conditions. The absence of oxygen or water will not keep the product from biodegrading. All that is needed are the presence of microorganisms which consume the plastic over a period of nine months to five years.

“An increasing number of customers are sensitive to the life-cycle impact on the environment of the products they source,” says vice president of sales for Allegheny Printed Plastics, Paul Friedrich. “This biodegradable card is the latest addition to our Earth-friendly offering addressing this concern. We also offer cards that consist of a minimum 50 percent pre-consumer recycled PVC, made from carefully segregated waste generated in our own plant during the normal course of production. This controlled process ensures we provide a consistently printable and reliable recycled product.”

Allegheny Printed Plastics has been producing custom printed plastics since 1936 and operates as a division of Pittsburgh-based Allegheny Plastics, Inc. Products include gift, loyalty, membership, private label credit, access control, gaming and hotel key cards.
