ORLANDO, FLA.—Clean the World has passed another significant milestone in its steady advance toward launching a global “hygiene revolution” with soap. The Orlando-based nonprofit organization has now distributed more than 7 million bars of soap to children and families in the United States, Haiti and more than 40 countries worldwide. Included in this number are 1.5 million bars of soap sent to Haiti since the January 2010 earthquake, with 300,000 soap bars delivered since an outbreak of cholera (diarrheal disease) in October.

Clean the World now distributes a bar of soap every 9.2 seconds worldwide, while the death rate among children from preventable diseases occurs every 9.6 seconds, according to the World Health Organization.

Clean the World was founded in February 2009 with a mission to recycle soap to save lives. By promoting proper hygiene and distributing new and recycled soap products, Clean the World seeks to stop the spread of preventable diseases, such as acute respiratory illnesses and diarrheal diseases, which are the top two killers of children younger than five.

Unnecessary Disposal of Soap, Shampoo

Each day in North America, nearly 2 million bars of soap and bottled amenities are discarded as trash. Nearly 358 tons of soap and plastic bottles are sent to local landfills on a daily basis. In less than two years since its founding, Clean the World has partnered with nearly 700 hotel properties in North America to provide soaps and bottled amenities (shampoos, conditioners and lotions) to people in need. While doing so, Clean the World has also fulfilled a valuable environmental mission by diverting an estimated 390 tons of hotel waste from polluting landfills in the United States and Canada.

“As the global need for soap intervention grows, Clean the World will be there to answer the call,” says Shawn Seipler, executive director of Clean the World. “We’ve seen with the recent cholera outbreak in Haiti, and the immediate response of our hotel partners and individual supporters to help address that need, that a global ‘hygiene revolution’ is already underway. Soap saves lives and we’re doing our best to be a leading provider and proponent of proper hygiene around the world.”

Clean the World works with well-known hospitality industry partners such as The Walt Disney World Resorts, Caesar’s Entertainment, Mandarin Oriental, Lakeview Hotels & Resorts, Larkspur Hotels, BellStar Hotels & Resorts, Canalta Hotels, and select Starwood, Marriott and Hilton properties.
