For me, one of the must-attend trade shows during the year is the HD Expo + Conference. This year it will be held May 2 to 4 at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas. I will be attending this year’s show. Hundreds of exhibitors will be there including more than 80 that identify themselves as being in the Sustainability/Sustainable Products category. Some examples include Tangent Sustainable Lumber, a maker of High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE) plastic lumber; PureWellness, which offers a variety of products to make a guestroom as clean and air-pure as possible; GrassTex, a synthetic turf maker that saves hotels watering and the application of pesticides and fertilizers; and Valley Forge Fabrics, a provider of decorative interior textiles made from recycled and other sustainable content.

For those who have never attended the event, its primary focus is design but many of the featured products cross over into operational areas. Vaask, for example, will be at this year’s expo with its hand sanitizing fixture that blends state-of-the-art technology with sleek, sustainable design.

Just as important as the product innovations this year will be the educational opportunities. On May 1, just prior to the official event, there will be an HD University Product Specification Bootcamp. It will cover categories ranging from lighting to casegoods. From May 2 to 4, there will be numerous sessions focused on various aspects of sustainability. Here is a summary of those sessions:

Tuesday, May 2:

HD Workshop | Hotel Net Zero
Session description: Knowing your Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions profile is critical to being a steward of the environment—alongside an action plan to reduce it. Learn the challenges of hotels looking to achieve net zero regardless of ground-up new construction or renovation/rebranding—and learn to embrace progress over time.

HDAC | The Shift Toward Inclusion, Investment, Impact
Session description: Are investors putting dollars and funds to work thoughtfully toward impact? What opportunities and market forces are driving greater inclusion? We dive into the challenges and solutions making a difference.

HD Workshop | Taking Complexity Out of Sustainability in Hospitality Furnishings
Session description: Compared to other typologies, hospitality environments have unique customization, renovation, and branding requirements that may affect efforts to develop sustainable interiors where product standards and certifications help measure environmental, social, and health and wellness impact. Learn the tools and resources that may be applied to lend transparency to sustainability considerations. Ascertain the key factors in the value chain across new-build and renovation projects, including wins, pain points, and ideas for successfully implementing multiple aspects of sustainability.

Wednesday, May 3:

Design Optimism | Innovative Strategies on Carbon, Climate, Planet
Session description: Hear from expert panelists on innovation, perseverance, game-changing ideas, curiosity, and big thinking on environmental shifts that matter most now.

HD Idea Exchange | The Future of Wellness
Session description: This highly interactive discussion centers on the challenges, solutions, and questions regarding what’s happening and what’s to come in wellness. Come join the conversation on what’s next in wellness for hospitality design.

Industry Leaders and EID Initiatives
Session description: In a panel discussion, hear how industry leaders have implemented EID (equity, inclusion, diversity) initiatives—and how they support EID within their companies. This panel also explores how all of us can find ways to develop and improve EID within the industry.

Talking in Circles | The Circularity Challenge in Hospitality
When it comes to circularity in design and specification, San Francisco International Airport (SFO) and its adjacent Grand Hyatt at SFO comprise a compelling case study. With the design and purchasing teams, adopt lessons in circularity from SFO as it leads in an ongoing commitment to zero waste.

Get in the Green Suppliers Spotlight!

Green Lodging News, lodging’s leading environmental news source, publishes Green Suppliers Spotlight, an e-blast to 19,569 subscribers that features the lodging industry’s leading green products and services. The e-blast features multiple vendors—unlike the current Green Supplier Spotlight that allows one supplier to “own” the Green Lodging News subscriber list for one e-blast. (Click here for a Green Suppliers Spotlight sample.)

Green Suppliers Spotlight is published weekly on Thursdays to general managers, owners, management companies, directors of sustainability, directors of engineering, facilities managers and many others who are either in purchasing positions or who influence purchasing decisions. Suppliers of green products and services throughout North America and beyond are invited to participate in the e-blast. (Minimum two suppliers per e-blast.) Green Suppliers Spotlight was created to give vendors an opportunity to reach a high number of industry purchasers at a very low cost—as low as $200 per e-mail. (Click here for rate sheet.)

Those advertising in Green Suppliers Spotlight can include up to 100 words, one image, contact information and multiple links to their website in their ad. At the end of each week, a report will be sent to each supplier with information on delivered e-mails, opens and click-throughs.
