MANCHESTER, N.H.—Xeros, the innovator of an ultra-low water cleaning system, announced it has joined a leading alliance committed to improving supply chain sustainability in the apparel and footwear industries. Xeros, the company formed to commercialize polymer bead technology developed at the University of Leeds, is now a member of the Sustainable Apparel Coalition (SAC), which also includes household names such as Adidas, Burberry, Coca Cola and Levi Strauss.

The coalition is an industry-wide group of more than 100 leading apparel and footwear brands, retailers, manufacturers, government organizations, nonprofit entities and academic institutions, committed to improving supply chain sustainability.

In its relationship with the SAC, Xeros will contribute data and resources to support the organization’s Higg Index, which aims to gauge environmental sustainability and drive supply chain decision making to improve efficiency and sustainability impact. The SAC says the index is an open-source, indicator-based tool, allowing coalition members to evaluate materials, products, facilities and processes, based on environmental and product design choices.

Based in the United Kingdom with its North American headquarters in Manchester, N.H., Xeros says it is manufacturing and marketing the first genuine innovation in laundering for 60 years. It produces washing machines in which the use of water is largely replaced by polymer beads, due to their ability to gently agitate stain and soil from textile surfaces easily.

The company says that, compared to conventional washing machines, its products offer superior cleaning and cost savings. They also typically demand more than 70 percent less water, 50 percent less energy and 50 percent less detergent, thus allowing businesses to advance their green credentials.

Moreover, users do not have to separate most colors, as the beads absorb stray dyes, and the machines’ gentler cleaning action and lower temperatures mean clothes stay new for longer. In addition, the company says the beads’ resilience means they can be used for hundreds of washes, without losing their effectiveness.

Commenting on the Sustainable Coalition membership, Bill Westwater, CEO, Xeros, said, “We’re pleased to be joining the SAC, which is a natural fit for us, given the outstanding environmental benefits our machines deliver to users. We’re confident the SAC will have a positive effect on product sustainability over time and become a model for how industries can collaborate in making a positive impact on value chain performance.”
