It was 33 years ago that the International Hotels Environment Initiative (IHEI) was launched by a consortium of chief executives from 10 global hotel companies, as a result of the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development. In 2013, IHEI closed down its organization and joined Business in the Community (BITC), part of the Prince’s Charities group, with HRH The Prince of Wales as president (now King Charles III). In 2020, the organization became an independent charity under the name of Sustainable Hospitality Alliance. Last year, the Sustainable Hospitality Alliance was rebranded as the World Sustainable Hospitality Alliance.
If you are not familiar with the World Sustainable Hospitality Alliance, click here. Under its different names, Green Lodging News has posted many articles about the Alliance over the years. The Alliance does a great job uniting the hospitality industry behind efforts to deliver impact locally and on a global scale.
Our Industry’s Largest Companies Involved
Members of the Alliance include companies such as Hilton, Hyatt, Marriott, Radisson Hotel Group and many others.
“Our hospitality members consist of world-leading hotel companies and strategic partners with a combined reach of over 66,000 properties and 8 million rooms—representing more than 300 brands,” the Alliance says.
The Alliance’s vision: “A prosperous and responsible hospitality sector that gives back to the destination more than it takes.” Its mission: “To accelerate the path to Net Positive Hospitality through strategic industry leadership, collaborative action, harmonization of metrics and regenerative solutions.”
The Alliance’s Goals:
Measurement: Work collaboratively to harmonize metrics and KPIs, develop standards and streamline reporting and benchmarking in sustainability.
Leadership: Position the Alliance as the authoritative voice in sustainability for the global hospitality industry and accelerate progress through bold and strategic leadership, innovation, entrepreneurship and collaboration.
Regenerative Solutions: Facilitate a collaborative approach to achieving Net Positive Hospitality through coordinating and developing innovative, practical and scalable solutions, tools and resources.
Helpful, actionable information on the Alliance website includes ESG reports from nine different companies, resources on Climate Action and Water Stewardship, a Human Rights resources guide, a Net Positive Hospitality Simulation, and the World Academy for Sustainable Hospitality.
The World Academy for Sustainable Hospitality is a transformational learning platform—equipping hospitality teams to translate the sector’s ambitious Net Positive vision into action. The online training tool acts as a catalyst for behavioral change, building shared sustainability knowledge and understanding of how every worker should apply sustainability learnings within their role, through tailored masterclasses for every department.
There are many ways to be part of the Alliance’s efforts—membership, partnership, affiliate membership, as an event sponsor, or participant in the World Sustainable Travel & Hospitality Awards program.
Among other things, the World Sustainable Hospitality Alliance provides an opportunity to network, share best practices, come to agreement on measurement formulas, and to unite the industry behind efforts toward Net Positive Hospitality.
