HOUSTON—For the second year in a row, Waste Management has been named the Sector Leader for Commercial Services, at the top of the 2019 Dow Jones Sustainability Indices (DJSI) for North America and the World. Amid a record number of companies completing the survey, this distinction recognizes the company’s leadership in its industry.

“We are extremely proud to be named a leader on the DJSI World Indices for the second year in a row,” said Jim Fish, President and CEO of Waste Management. “Waste Management has spent nearly 30 years focusing on environmental innovations, sustainability and change. We continue to take significant strides forward, and the accolades we receive are a result of the ongoing dedication and drive of our employees.”

Waste Management’s 2019 Total Sustainability Score leads the Commercial Services & Supplies industry, based on the RobecoSAM Corporate Sustainability Assessment used to compile the DJSI. The report reviews company performances across 61 industries and Waste Management earned a total assessment score of 75, compared to the industry average of 38.

Company Excels in Economic, Environmental Performance

The company’s scores outranked the industry average in all reported areas. Waste Management’s economic score was almost twice the industry average at 80 vs. 41, and its environmental score of 90 was more than twice the industry average of 43.

In the RobecoSAM Corporate Sustainability Assessment, Waste Management received a score of 90 percent or above in 14 categories. The company also received a score of 100 percent in the following categories: Climate Strategy, Environmental Policy & Management Systems, Materiality, Risk & Crisis Management, Operational Eco-Efficiency, Labor Practice Indicators, and Human Rights.

“We congratulate Waste Management for being included in the DJSI for North America and the World. The SAM Corporate Sustainability Assessment has again raised the bar in identifying those companies best-positioned to address future sustainability challenges and opportunities,” Manjit Jus, Head of ESG Ratings, RobecoSAM said. “This year—which marks the 20th anniversary of the DJSI—record corporate interest in the SAM CSA reflects the enduring relevance of the DJSI for measuring and advancing ESG practices.”

The RobecoSAM Corporate Sustainability Assessment has been a comprehensive evaluation of companies’ sustainability practices and performance for two decades. Every March, RobecoSAM extends invitations to over 3,500 of the largest global companies to participate in the assessment by completing an in-depth questionnaire.
