PUERTO VALLARTA, MEXICO—In honor of Earth Day, Velas Resorts is offering a series of immersive, eco-conscious activities at its properties in Puerto Vallarta, Riviera Nayarit, Los Cabos, and Riviera Maya. These initiatives are designed to connect guests with the natural world, highlight the importance of sustainability, and celebrate the local ecosystems and cultures that surround each property.

“At Velas Resorts, we believe that sustainability isn’t a single-day effort—it’s a daily commitment to minimize our impact, support local communities, and preserve the culture around us,” says Juan Vela Ruiz, President of Velas Resorts. “This Earth Day, we’re inviting our guests to join us in meaningful experiences that highlight the beauty of Mexico and the importance of protecting its nature.”

At Grand Velas Riviera Nayarit, the Earth Day celebrations include an educational and fun Eco Tour featuring “Bonita,” a walk-through inflatable whale that tells the story of the whales who annually visit Banderas Bay. Guests can also join a bike tour through the area’s natural surroundings. In partnership with Azper, the resort is also offering a honey extraction experience from the onsite bee apartments where guests can observe or participate, followed by a hands-on DIY workshop to create candles or soap using beeswax.

Bees are a Big Deal

AZPER Guardián de la Vida (Guardian of Life) is an organization dedicated to environmental conservation efforts aimed at enhancing the well-being of a destination. AZPER actively engages in a variety of initiatives to protect and preserve bees, promote sustainable practices, and raise awareness about environmental issues and the positive impact bees have on our planet. Besides being chosen by discerning guests every year for vacation, Grand Velas Riviera Nayarit is also a prime spot selected by bees to rest and feed during their pollination journey, lending support in crop production, biodiversity, healthy soil, clean air, and jobs for more than 100,000 residents on the Pacific Coast of Mexico. Additionally, a resort-wide beach cleanup invites guests to give back by helping preserve the coastline. These initiatives complement the resort’s year-round sustainability practices, which include composting programs, support for local recycling, use of biodegradable products, and cultural activities.

At Casa Velas, guests can participate in a Sustainable Gardening Workshop set in the resort’s lush Botanical Garden. The experience includes an introduction to organic gardening, tips on native plant selection, chemical-free growing techniques, eco-friendly pest control, and sustainable garden design. Participants will put their knowledge into action by creating a small garden using recycled materials. The workshop aims to inspire a deeper connection with nature while equipping guests with practical green-living skills they can bring home.

Nearby, Velas Vallarta is bringing together hotel guests, condominium owners, and staff members for a meaningful tree-planting initiative at the nearby Marina Vallarta Golf Club. Guided by the resort’s expert gardening team, participants will plant over 100 trees, each thoughtfully selected for its compatibility with the local soil and climate. The effort is designed to promote sustainability, enhance the natural beauty of the area, and create a lasting environmental impact that benefits the broader Puerto Vallarta community.

T-shirt Decorating Workshop

At Grand Velas Riviera Maya, Earth Day programming is geared toward the entire family. Kids and teens can take part in a T-shirt decorating workshop using recycled materials, fostering creativity and environmental awareness. In the evening, a pre-Hispanic night show inspired by Mayan traditions will celebrate the harmony between culture and nature with fire elements and ancestral music. Guests are also invited to participate in a beach cleanup following a special seaside ceremony, and a tree-planting activity will allow families to leave a lasting green footprint.

Visitors can also tour the resort’s on-site meliponarium, home to native stingless bees revered by the ancient Maya for their spiritual and ecological significance. As part of the experience, guests can participate in the resort’s honey tasting where they can sample local honey known for their unique flavors. The activity highlights the resort’s commitment to environmental stewardship through the careful protection and caregiving of this endangered species. As a symbolic gesture of conservation, the resort will observe a scheduled “lights out” moment, turning off non-essential electronics with the participation of guests and staff alike.

Grand Velas Los Cabos is celebrating sustainability and creativity with a lineup of engaging, family-friendly activities. At the heart of the festivities is a special Kids Fashion Recycle Design Workshop hosted at the resort’s Kids Club, where young guests can unleash their imagination by creating stylish outfits using recycled materials. The event encourages environmental awareness through hands-on fun, while also showcasing the importance of upcycling. Throughout the rest of the day, the resort will offer a schedule of themed eco-activities and crafts tailored for both kids and teens, blending education with entertainment.

With initiatives that span environmental education, cultural celebration, and hands-on conservation, Velas Resorts’ Earth Day programs reflect a deep-rooted commitment to sustainability. For more information visit https://www.velasresorts.com/.
