The Drought in the Southwest: The Worst in 1,200 Years

Eighteen years ago, I wrote about the dropping water levels of Lake Mead and Lake Powell. Both lakes are fed and connected by the Colorado River system. Water released from Lake Powell through the Glen Canyon Dam flows downstream through the Grand Canyon and directly feeds Lake Mead. Lake Mead is then impounded further downstream by the Hoover Dam. Thanks to a long drought, Lake Mead is now at a record low level of 1,038 feet—26 percent to 27 percent of its full capacity. Lake Powell is currently about 21.1 percent to 22 percent full. As of early September 2026, the level of Lake Powell dropped to around 3,517.5 feet above sea level. This breaks previous historic low records set in 2023.

Lake Mead and Lake Powell are not filling up due to a severe, long-term drought. The mega drought in the Southwest is now the worst in 1,200 years. Climate change and persistent overuse of water from the Colorado River system are also having a huge impact. The water taken out of the Colorado River by seven states and millions of residents exceeds the natural water flowing back in. When water runs low, farms get less water, the ability of dams to generate cheap electricity is impaired, and upstream and localized tourism sees declining visitors and millions in losses as boat ramps close, rippling through hospitality sectors tied to the reservoirs. Low water levels even mean warmer water which impacts fish health.

Fortunately, the hotel industry in Las Vegas, greatly dependent on Colorado River water, has invested significantly in water efficiency. MGM Resorts International, for example, has saved more than 17 billion gallons of water globally since 2007 through efficient infrastructure, sustainable landscaping, and advanced cooling technology. Investments in low-flow fixtures and leak detection and repair have also helped. Caesars Entertainment reduced its water consumption per square foot by 8 percent in recent reports compared to its 2019 baseline, driven by enterprise-wide conservation and efficiency initiatives. Property-level CodeGreen sustainability teams audit resource consumption and engage both staff and guests in conservation. As a city, Las Vegas recycles nearly 99 percent of its indoor water.

The drought affecting the Las Vegas water supply is expected to be a long-term, permanent shift toward a drier climate rather than a temporary dry spell, as detailed by USA Today. Scientists call this permanent drying “aridification.” It will last for decades or longer because the Colorado River basin suffers from a lack of consistent snowpack.
