NEW YORK—Boutique Design New York (BDNY) wrapped up at the Javits Center in New York on November 10 after a two-day event that featured 750 exhibitors and drew 16,000 industry professionals.
Featured were innovations in boutique hospitality design, including new furniture, lighting, and textiles, and accredited sessions focused on topics like AI, wellness, sustainability, and the future of luxury.
In the Best of BDNY Product Design Competition’s Sustainable category, the winner was Daltile’s Panoramic Black Diamond.
On the trade show floor there were hundreds of collections with robust sustainability stories. It would be impossible to list them all here but the following are some examples:
Sky Factory—The company describes what it does in this way: “Sky Factory designs and manufactures Luminous SkyCeilings and Luminous Virtual Windows—biophilic illusions of nature—that enhance human wellness in the built environment.
BEMOSS—Real moss preserved at its peak beauty—zero maintenance and ideal for lobby focal walls, spa relaxation rooms, conference rooms, and more. The moss naturally absorbs sound for peaceful spaces.
expormim—Headquartered in Valencia, Spain, expormim is a producer of handcrafted furniture for indoors and outdoors. The company is currently certified to ISO 14001, an international standard that helps it identify and control its environmental impact and promote sustainable strategies, such as the installation of a photovoltaic plant in 2022.
The PTAC & VTAC Improved
Nextac—The Nextac alternative to a traditional PTAC or VTAC is much sleeker, uses 75 percent less power, and is very quiet with MERV 13 air filtration that captures 98 percent of small particles down to 0.3 microns, such as bacteria, smoke, mold spores, and virus-carrying droplets.
At Ezpeleta, the company offers a wide range of 100 percent recyclable parasols that are ideal for lounge areas. All of the parasols are made with Olefin, a fabric made with polypropylene thread which is characterized for being soft and light, with an attractive appearance and eco-friendly material. Featured at BDNY was the EOLO PURETI parasol. Its photocatalytic nanotechnology enables it to decontaminate the air that surrounds it.
Among the collections featured by Signature Flooring was EmberVeil. The company’s description: “Every ember leaves a trace—a glow that lingers, a surface forever changed. EmberVeil captures that fleeting transformation where light and shadow intertwine, and charred textures and shimmering patinas reveal new dimensions of beauty. Intricately layered patterns echo the movement of flame—flowing, fractured, and fluid—while sculptural weaves shift gracefully with light.” Click here to see the green rating programs in which Signature Flooring participates.
Abandoned houses, derelict sheds, discarded railroad-sleepers, overstock, wine barrels, old floors. These are just some of the places where wood is salvaged by Wonderwall Studios to make premium paneling. The company was at BDNY with examples from its many collections.
Mountain Lumber featured its premium hardwood flooring, wall cladding, and custom millwork, new or reclaimed, sustainably made and milled to order for commercial and residential spaces. Mountain Lumber is a carbon neutral company.
LIKHA partners with Filipino artisans to create handcrafted, ethically made home and lifestyle products that bring warmth, authenticity, and elevated design to hospitality spaces. Items displayed at BDNY ranged from kitchen items to planters to baskets.
Sustainable Mattresses
Sleep on Green featured its handcrafted, chemical free, sustainable mattresses made in Italy with the finest natural materials. “Our mission is to better our planet one mattress at a time, one person at a time,” the company says.
Saatva, also on hand with its mattress collection, says its mattresses never include harmful chemicals, fiberglass, or pesticides. Materials carry several certifications including GOTS and Greenguard Gold.
Cane-line, a Danish design company with more than 35 years of experience designing and manufacturing functional and comfortable furniture, displayed examples of its interior and exterior pieces. “Responsibility is embedded in every stage of our company, from design process, choice of material, production process and even the end stage after many years of use,” the company says.
Greenington Fine Bamboo Furniture highlighted its wide range of furniture, wall panels, ceiling tiles, and other products made from bamboo. One of the earth’s fastest growing plants, bamboo is a grass that grows to maturity in five years or less. It is 20 percent harder than red oak.
Brava, a division of Ecological Fibers, featured its wall coverings that are PVC-free, PFAS Free, highly printable, and can be fully customized with various coatings and over 120 unique embossing patterns.
Towels & Linens
Welspun Hospitality, a certified women owned company, offered its many choices of towels and linens. “We all share the vital responsibility of preserving a healthy environment for future generations,” the company says. “Our efforts are focused on three key areas: water, air, and land. At the heart of our mission is the restoration of ecosystems and the maintenance of ecological balance. Our ESG strategy is thoughtfully designed to align with our core philosophy of inclusivity.”
Amba Products featured its Heated Towel Racks that reduce bacteria growth on towels by 94 percent over a three-day period. Also reduced: musty smells.
Berkshire Hospitality offered its Repose Cotton Lyocell blanket and bolster, crafted from a 50/50 blend of cotton and lyocell for lasting quality. “This fabric is gentle on your skin and kind to the planet,” the company says.
A 1% for the Planet company, Cambium was at BDNY with its Carbon Smart Wood: a new class of traceable, high-performance materials for furniture, millwork, and mass-timber projects.
Pacific Green featured its furniture made from Palmwood. The company developed it in the early 1990s. Reclaimed coconut stems are converted into a hardwearing material ideal for furniture and architecture.
FSC-Certified Raw Wood Materials
Bjelin, also at BDNY, designs and manufactures wood flooring and furniture using advanced technology. Production takes place in state-of-the-art factories in Sweden and Croatia, where Bjelin uses premium, FSC-certified raw wood materials. Skilled employees, drawing on generations of experience, refine the renowned Slavonian oak, ensuring exceptional quality in every product.
Because Valley Forge Fabrics is the world’s leading supplier of decorative interior textiles for the Hospitality industry, it is able to use its influence in the textile manufacturing industry to further the innovation and use of recycled fibers, fibers made from eucalyptus and other botanicals, and recyclable textiles. The company offered its latest innovations at BDNY.
AHF | Armstrong Flooring + Crossville featured Crossville brand porcelain stone, glass, and natural stone tile for both residential and commercial settings in interior and exterior floors, walls, and countertops. Made from natural elements, the surface covering products yield a variety of unique textures, looks, and functions for designers and architects.
