CANCUN—Sunset World Resorts & Vacation Experiences announced the official launch of Ethos during a breakfast at the Tourism Tianguis 2012. Ethos, an innovative $3 million agricultural project, is a farm in the Mayan jungle where produce, plants and honey will be organically grown and produced. These items will be used to supply their six hotels, which include nearly 1,000 hotel rooms in Cancun and the Riviera Maya. “Ethos is an example of our values and great commitment to the community, environment and tourism, making us the first hotel chain in southeastern Mexico to produce organic materials and become more sustainable every day,” said Orlando Arroyo Marroquin, chairman of the Board of Directors of Sunset World.

Following in the footsteps of the World Tourism Organization (WTO) and the United Nations, the tour group set up this farm, just 25 miles from Cancun, in the jungle. The project drives the local economy by providing 60 jobs to the Mayan community in its first stage. The project also ensures the resorts will have the freshest produce including papaya, lime, tomato, cucumber, watermelon, melon and squash, among other fruits and vegetables.

Many Ornamental Plants Produced

This farm, which will soon cover 1,000 acres, produced 69,000 exotic ornamental plants of 10 different species in its pilot project (30 acres), and is expected to eventually produce 200,000 plants. These items are used to decorate the lobbies, restaurants and meeting rooms of the hotels.

Ethos also includes a bee apiary which produced 30 tons of honey this year. The volume will soon exceed 200 tons. The honey is used for human consumption and the development of products for hair and skin care like shampoos, conditioners, creams and soaps, which are available in the spas and hotel rooms.

“Northern Quintana Roo is not an agricultural area, but with ingenuity and dedication, we overcame the adverse ground conditions,” said Arroyo Marroquin, adding that they have created an innovative irrigation pumping system that uses solar panels, alternative energy, and wind turbines to help reduce carbon emissions and the impact on global warming.

Vision ‘Respectful of Nature’

“Ethos is a Greek word for “starting point,” and that is precisely what Sunset World is doing, going back to the origin of life with a sustainable vision that is respectful of nature,” Arroyo Marroquin said.
