BOCA RATON, FLA.—The Red Carnation Hotel Collection, a long-standing supporter of the removal of single use plastics across all their 17 (soon to be 20) luxury hotels, has banned single use plastic water bottles in addition to more than 20 everyday plastic convenience items from all properties for some time now.

Red Carnation Hotels is a sibling of the Travel Corporation’s family of brands and works in partnership with its TreadRight Foundation to #MakeTravelMatter. TTC remains dedicated to removing as many unnecessary single use plastics from its worldwide supply chains on our thousands of immersive trips and experiences delivered in over 70 countries around the world, every day.

Red Carnation Hotels continues to reduce most unnecessary single-use plastics within its properties, and it remains committed and dedicated to achieving these important steps by December 2022. Red Carnation has established Green Teams at all its properties to put these steps in motion to achieve its three-year plastic elimination goal.

Takeaway coffee cups and lids have been switched to compostable paper and corn starch versions and plastic sanitation bags for TV remote controls have been replaced with recyclable paper instead.

Plastic Stirrers, Toothpicks on the Way Out

In addition, Red Carnation Hotels is in the process of discontinuing the use of other plastic items such as cocktail stirrers, toothpicks and coffee capsules.

In the fight against plastic water bottles, the company’s London hotels have continued an ongoing partnership with Belu Water, recipients of the Queens Award for Enterprise, Sustainable Development in 2017. A like-minded company, Belu is known for its ethical glass bottles, which are made from 45 percent recycled material, and it’s also famous for donating 100 percent of its profits to Wateraid.

In 2018, Red Carnation Hotels continued to work with its hotel suppliers to find alternatives for the plastic bottles typically used for hotel toiletries. In Europe, there are recycling initiatives in place for unused soap and toiletries, such as The Egerton House Hotel’s partnership with Clean Conscience, a charitable organization that recycles and repurposes partially used toiletries in order to provide hygiene products to those in need.

Hotel Staff Participate in Beach Cleanups

As well as sustainable schemes and partnerships, the staff at The Red Carnation Hotel Collection aren’t afraid to get their hands dirty in order to help the environment. Employees at The Twelve Apostles, The Oyster Box, and The Chesterfield Palm Beach are invited to participate in weekly or monthly beach cleanups and guests are also welcome to take part.

At The Twelve Apostles Hotel & Spa, water saving initiatives in Cape Town are incredibly important. Hotel staff does everything they can to save water and over 40 initiatives have been implemented—such as the replacement of bath plugs with two-minute shower timers in guestrooms, reusable ice cubes, waterless urinals, systems to collect and reuse otherwise wasted water and rain water and more. The hotel has set up a water team, which forms part of their Green Team, and a Water Warrior to lead the process in the hotel. With the above initiatives in place, the hotel has reduced water consumption by 42 percent from January 2016 to 2017.
