Maine Innkeepers Raise Record Amount for Annual ‘Hospitality for Habitat’
FREEPORT, MAINE—Travelers took advantage of greatly reduced room rates to support Habitat for Humanity in record numbers this spring according to Greg Dugal, executive director of the Maine Innkeepers Assn. PORTLAND, ORE.—The Doubletree Hotel Portland announced that it has been selected as the third place recipient in the “100 Best Green Companies to Work For in Oregon,” as well as one of the “Oregon’s 100 Best Companies to Work For” in separate rankings by Oregon Business Magazine. Hilton Garden Inn Gatlinburg Eyes LEED Silver Certification
GATLINBURG, TENN.—The Hilton Garden Inn Gatlinburg, adjacent to The Great Smoky Mountain National Park, is on its way to becoming the first LEED certified hotel in Tennessee. The 118-unit property opened on May 28. According to Logan Coykendall, part owner of the hotel and owner of Hospitality Management Solutions, the Sevierville, Tenn.-based management company that operates it, the Hilton Garden Inn should achieve a “solid Silver” LEED rating later this year. Dubai Dept. of Tourism Launches Carbon Emissions Reduction Initiative
DUBAI, U.A.E.—The Dubai Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing (DTCM) has launched an initiative to reduce carbon emissions (CO2) in the region’s hospitality industry by 20 percent by the year 2011. The launch is together with the Dubai Green Tourism Award which will be in line with World Environment Day. The initiatives are all part of the department’s sustainable tourism agenda for the emirate.
The Dubai Green Tourism Award, to be presented in December 2009, is expected to attract 200 hotels from three, four and five stars and deluxe hotel apartments that are eligible to compete for the annual honors.

Sears Tower’s Green Plan Includes 500-Room LEED Hotel
CHICAGO—Sears Tower announced plans for a renovation that will result in unparalleled energy savings and reduced CO2 emissions. The tallest building in the Western Hemisphere will reduce its base building electricity use by up to 80 percent, which includes a combination of energy savings and cogeneration. The energy savings equal 68 million kilowatt hours annually or 150,000 barrels of oil every year. The sustainability plans will also drive economic development in the West Loop, creating more than 3,600 jobs, and are part of a broader initiative to transform the global icon.
