GUATEMALA—The Eco-Guest House at San Martín, a new eco-lodge in the Guatemalan Highlands, offers visitors a unique blend of cultural immersion, community service opportunities, and environmental responsibility. Managed by the nonprofit Local Hope Guatemala, the guest house is situated in the village of San Martín Chiquito, a half hour’s drive from Quetzaltenango.

The lodge, located about 8,500 feet above sea level near Lake Chicabal, has 12 spacious rooms, each with a private bathroom offering hot running water, full-pressure hot showers, and in-room heaters. Unlike many accommodations in the region, the Eco-Guest House offers robust Wi-Fi and has earned a 5-star rating from Airbnb guests.

Guests staying at the Eco-Guest House can partake in cultural exchange activities and community service through Local Hope’s ongoing volunteer programs. These programs include building chicken coops, teaching English to local children, art projects, math and computer tutoring, and cooking and weaving lessons. Visitors can also learn about Mayan history and traditions, thereby gaining a deeper understanding of the local culture.

A Base for Local Hope’s Volunteer Programs

The lodge serves as a base for Local Hope’s volunteer programs, which combine service in San Martín Chiquito with sightseeing and activities in the area. Flexible packages, ranging from day trips to extended stays, are available and can be fully customized to suit the guests’ preferences.

The Eco-Guest House is a model of sustainability designed to have minimal environmental impact. It utilizes solar power and rainwater collection to reduce its dependency on local resources, while an on-site “biodigester” handles waste management to protect local rivers and streams.

All proceeds from the room charges go to fund the programs of Local Hope Guatemala, a 32-year-old nonprofit organization that empowers families and communities in this remote, underserved area.
