CHARLESTON, ILL.—Modern Traveler Magazine (MT) recently debuted its first digital issue with a focus on responsible and experiential travel and voluntourism. Geared toward the “enlightened explorer,” MT encourages readers to become a part of the places they visit, in turn giving back to the communities they visit, whether they be around the block or around the world.

MT provides readers with the resources they need to become responsible travelers, while at the same time experiencing extraordinary vacations. Writers from around the globe tell of adventures that help preserve the environment and culture and sustain the local economies of the places they visit.

“Today’s travelers are looking for adventure and meaning in their vacations,” said Sarah Miller, MT editor. “Our magazine is filled with examples on how to achieve these dreams.”

Experiential travel and voluntourism provide opportunities beyond the traditional vacation to an exotic locale. These types of vacations are about bringing home a collection of memories that will last a lifetime, not just a suitcase full of souvenirs. They encompass everything the visitor sees, eats, learns, thinks and feels, Miller said.

Brooke Shields Interviewed

The current cover story follows actress Brooke Shields and her mother on one such adventure to the Daintree Rainforest in Australia as they immerse themselves in the aboriginal culture.

“I am ecstatic to be here experiencing something that lies at the very heart and soul of real Australian culture,” said Shields during an interview with MT contributor Hedda Moye. “This is extremely special.”

The Great Barrier Reef, Costa Rica and Fiji are a few of the other exotic locales visited in the first issue. Stateside, MT’s publisher and editor explore the New England coast and Midwestern cities to connect readers with responsible vacations closer to home.

The Spring issue, which will be available in April, follows publisher Bob McElwee on an adventure to St. Martin and features the top eco-lodges around the world. MT will also cover bold entrepreneurs who are creating new travel experiences as well as celebrity reviews of responsible travel destinations and insider interviews.

Publication is Digital Only

MT is a completely digital quarterly publication available online at www.moderntravelermagazine.com. The first issue is available free for readers, who can then subscribe to future issues.

“Being a digital magazine has numerous advantages,” Miller said. “Our readers have instant access to each issue and can enjoy it at their leisure—from home, work, school or wherever they might be. And, of course, it’s environmentally friendly.”

Web exclusives, travel news, insightful blogs and an e-newsletter are also available on the site.

“We hope to encourage more people to be responsible travelers,” Miller said. “There is a whole world ready to be explored, but some of the places may not exist much longer if we don’t visit them and make an effort to save them.”
