GUIYANG, CHINA—Johnson Controls, a leader in building technology and services, recently helped Hyatt Regency Guiyang become Hyatt Group’s first hotel in China to achieve gold certification in Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, New Construction (LEED-NC Gold). Peter Templeton, vice president of the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), and Nellie Cheng, China director of USGBC, officially awarded the certification to Qiao Gencai, general manager of Hyatt Regency Guiyang.
“Zhongtian Group promotes a sustainable lifestyle, builds green cities, practices energy conservation and reduces emissions in our work to develop western China,” said Luo Yuping, chairman of Zhongtian Urban Development Group and a hotel developer.
Hyatt Regency Guiyang is Zhongtian Urban Development Group’s second LEED certified project. Yuping said that as green building gains momentum in Guizhou, Zhontian will continue to work jointly with other businesses and organizations to promote and achieve green building in western China.
Johnson Controls’ Role in Project
Hyatt Regency Guiyang is a 64,000-square-meter, five-star hotel owned by Hyatt Hotels Corp. and is an important part of the Guiyang International Conference and Exhibition Center. Johnson Controls consulted at the start of the project’s planning and design stages as well as engineered and installed several of the efficient systems that follow LEED standards. China is the third largest market for LEED in the world, with more than 1,300 registered and certified projects.
Property achievements include:
• Energy reduction of more than 60 percent through the installation of efficient building system controls and equipment as well as maximizing natural lighting and ventilation.
• Decreased water use with a rainwater and air-conditioning condensation collection system as well as installation of water efficient appliances.
• Sourced local materials and created a building material recycling program.
• Improved the indoor sound environment by installing insulation in exterior walls, windows and floors.
• Created a healthy indoor environment with outdoor air flow monitoring, intensified ventilation and low-emission materials.
The USGBC’s Templeton said, “I’m delighted that LEED green building certification system is being implemented in western China, especially the Zhongtian Group’s projects, which obtained LEED higher-level certification for two consecutive years. We would like to congratulate Hyatt Regency Guiyang for achieving LEED-NC Gold certification, which recognizes its leading role in energy efficiency and environmental protection.”
LEED was developed to help building owners and operators find and implement ways to be environmentally responsible and resource-efficient. Since LEED’s inception in 2000, more than 55,000 commercial and institutional projects in 147 countries and territories have participated in the green building rating system, representing 3.1 billion square meters. As a member of USGBC and a leader in promoting green buildings, Johnson Controls has assisted about 1.4 million square meters of building space around the world to attain LEED green building certification, including the Empire State Building in New York.
Michelle Bai, Johnson Controls’ Building Efficiency marketing manager in Shanghai, said the Hyatt Regency Guiyang project allowed Johnson Controls to use its experience in LEED certification and working with landmark projects to advance the national strategy of developing the middle and western regions of China.
