HX: The Hotel Experience, Boutique Design New York Combine for One Show

For the first time in many years I will not be attending HX: The Hotel Experience or Boutique Design New York (BDNY). Both trade shows will be taking place at the Javits Center in New York from November 14 to 15—as one combined show, I just learned from an exhibitor. It is a bit confusing because as I am writing this both shows still have their own separate websites. HX and under its former name—the International Hotel, Motel & Restaurant Show (IHMRS)—used to be my favorite show. There was a time when it took up two levels of the Javits Center with 1,000+ exhibitors—representing all parts of the industry, including our nation’s hotel schools. Over the years the show slowly got smaller and as of today there are fewer than 50 exhibitors listed as what is/was part of HX. Of course, the pandemic has had an impact on HX and other trade shows, but HX has been losing its relevancy for quite some time. I hope the owners of the show (or someone else) figures out a way to give our industry a great show and conference focused on operations.

This year, as in past years, BDNY has attracted hundreds of exhibitors and has an excellent lineup of educational sessions. I wrote about those sessions this past week. BDNY had been growing every year prior to the pandemic. HX just never had the same vibe as BDNY.

I do wish the best for all of those attending and exhibiting at HX/BDNY this year.

The Sinclair, a Marriott Autograph Collection Hotel

Be sure to keep an eye out for my article on The Sinclair, a Marriott Autograph Collection Hotel. The property in Fort Worth, Texas uses Power over Ethernet (PoE) technology to power all its lighting, motorized window treatments, mini bars, and smart mirrors. It is the same technology used to power desktop phones, Wi-Fi access points and security cameras at the property. The upcoming Hilton-branded Hotel Marcel in New Haven Conn. will use the same PoE technology. That hotel is expected to open in the first quarter of 2022. I wrote about that property almost a year ago.

Highgate & Its Green Initiatives

Also coming soon to Green Lodging News is a focus on Highgate and its green initiatives. The company recently announced an upgrade to 100 percent renewable electricity, beginning with a majority of its select service properties as well as 17 full-service hotels. The initiative will be certified by Green-e Energy, the nation’s leading independent certification and verification program for renewable energy.

If your hotel or company is doing something unique in sustainability and you believe it deserves some “ink”, send me a note to greenlodgingnews@gmail.com.

Green Suppliers Spotlight is published weekly on Thursdays to general managers, owners, management companies, directors of sustainability, directors of engineering, facilities managers and many others who are either in purchasing positions or who influence purchasing decisions. Suppliers of green products and services throughout North America and beyond are invited to participate in the e-blast. (Minimum two suppliers per e-blast.) Green Suppliers Spotlight was created to give vendors an opportunity to reach a high number of industry purchasers at a very low cost—as low as $200 per e-mail. (Click here for rate sheet.)

Those advertising in Green Suppliers Spotlight can include up to 100 words, one image, contact information and multiple links to their website in their ad. At the end of each month, a report will be sent to each supplier with information on delivered e-mails, opens and click-throughs.
