ATLANTA—For the first time, Hospitality Design magazine will present an entire day of eco-friendly programming, HD Green Day, on Wednesday, May 14, prior to HD Expo at the Sands Expo Center/Venetian Conference Center in Las Vegas. For designers, hoteliers, restaurateurs, architects and other creative professionals dedicated to improving the environment through their work, HD Green Day will offer the opportunity to impact the future of sustainable design through an interactive panel on design standards. Educational panels, award presentations and a keynote address will provide tools for attendees to implement next steps in green design.

During Green Day, one of the most ground-breaking and important discussions among industry heavyweights will be a session entitled, “Talk is Cheap: Defining Standards For Hospitality.” This two-hour interactive session, moderated by Hospitality Design managing editor Tara Mastrelli, will include representatives from top owners, purchasers, designers and the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) to discuss the unique demands of the hospitality industry when it comes to green building and design standards.

This critical session will feature breakout tables where attendee input will be heard, and is the only open forum that will be considered by the USGBC in creating new LEED standards for hospitality, which are currently underway. LEED is the official building and operations standard to qualify green properties, and does not currently have a hotel-specific rating system.

Additional panels will include “Why Go Green?”—a look at the business of eco-friendly design—and “Achieving the New Look of Green”—a session exploring the future of green design through tips, techniques and details on the next generation of green building.

Danny Seo to Present Keynote Address

Hospitality Design magazine’s Green Luncheon will feature a special keynote address by environmental lifestyle expert, Danny Seo. As the editor-at-large of Country Home magazine and a contributor to The Early Show on CBS, Seo is also author of Conscious Style Home: Eco-Friendly Living for the 21st Century and Simply Green: Parties, which have received rave reviews from critics at the New York Times and Food & Wine. Seo is widely considered America’s leading lifestyle authority on modern, eco-friendly living.

In its inaugural year, the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID)/Hospitality Design (HD) Earth-Minded Hospitality Design Project and Product Design Competition winners will be announced on Green Day. Nominees were required to submit a complete entry form with product or project description, photos, floor plan or samples by March 19, 2008.

The winner of the NEWH Inc. “The Hospitality Industry Network” Sustainable Hospitality Student Design Competition—underwritten by JL Furnishings/Lone Meadow, Designtex and Hospitality Design magazine—will also be presented at the luncheon. The student winner will receive $6,000 in scholarship funds. The student’s university will also receive $6,000.

Hospitality Design Exposition & Conference (HD Expo) is presented by the Hospitality Design Group, part of Nielsen Business Media, which also produces Hospitality Design Boutique Exposition & Conference (HD Boutique) in Miami Beach (September 17-18, 2008).
