Heating & Cooling

With up to 50 percent to 70 percent of a hotel’s energy bill attributed to heating and cooling (especially in limited-service hotels), there is no question that wise selection of equipment is important. Increasingly, hotel owners are turning to clean energy technology for heating and cooling. Got news or a story idea to share? Purdue Researchers Develop Energy-Efficient Method for Using 100 Percent Outdoor Air in Buildings

WEST LAFAYETTE, IND.—By now, it’s well known that circulating outdoor air in buildings is safer than recirculating indoor air. That point was driven home by the pandemic. Problem is, it is just not cost-effective. That may soon change. Purdue University engineers have proposed a system that combines new membrane technology with the latest HVAC systems to make 100 percent outdoor air systems more energy-efficient and economically feasible—especially in warm, humid climates. They say their system could save up to 66 percent in energy costs for large buildings that choose to use the safer outdoor air. Previous research at Purdue has shown that...

Ways to Improve HVAC Summer Efficiency

Finding the right HVAC system to cool commercial spaces does not have to mean making a choice between high-quality performance and efficiency, but it does take homework. In order to make the most informed decisions, facilities managers and building owners need to be mindful of not only the purchase and installation price but its protected service life and operational costs. Once the numbers are crunched, it is often found that the most energy efficient equipment offsets a larger up-front price and more than makes up for it in long-term operational savings. Look at the Full Picture Something to keep in mind when...

NRA: Switch out Old Kitchen Equipment for New Technology, Save Big on Operating Costs

CHICAGO—Between energy cost savings and equipment rebates, Werewolf American Pub saved more than $10,000 by switching to energy-efficient equipment. Energy-efficient cooking and commercial kitchen ventilation (CKV) systems save money. That is a lesson experts and organizations like the California Energy Commission (CEC) have been preaching for years. To prove it in the real world, the CEC awarded a Building Natural Gas Technology (BNGT) grant to Frontier Energy, Inc., operator of PG&E’s Food Service Technology Center (FSTC), San Ramon, Calif. “We wanted to do more than just swap out standard equipment for energy-efficient models,” says David Zabrowski, Vice President, Frontier Energy. “We wanted to...
