SANTA CLARA, CALIF.—A new company, ecoLiving Essentials, has launched to provide consumers and the travel and hospitality industries with biodegradable products made locally from sustainable resources. Established by two moms with a shared respect for the planet and a passionate concern for their children’s future, the founders have rolled out Biodegradable Travel Booties and the Biodegradable Shower Cap.
As frequent business travelers, the founders were inspired to start the company because they felt unprotected when required to remove their shoes when going through airport security checkpoints. According to doctors in a recent WebMD article, taking your shoes off at airport security checkpoints exposes your feet to germs, bacteria and injury. While the TSA allows travelers to wear disposable booties through checkpoint screening, they must be disposed of prior to leaving the screening area. With millions of people passing through checkpoints each day, the number of booties heading to landfills is alarming. ecoLiving Essentials’ Biodegradable Travel Booties meet TSA requirements, giving travelers a safe and eco-friendly option.
“Very few airports offer disposable booties for travelers to use when passing through airport security to protect their feet and socks,” said Quyen Huynh, co-founder of ecoLiving Essentials. “While there are other options out there, our commitment to the environment inspired us to create an eco-friendly alternative that won’t do any harm to our planet, while also protecting travelers from germs and bacteria. We really wanted peace of mind when traveling, and we hope that these products give that to consumers.”
Biodegradable Shower Cap
The founders took their idea one step further by creating a biodegradable shower cap, one of the only environmentally friendly caps currently available. The hotel industry serves millions of travelers each month, with many providing plastic disposable shower caps that end up creating more waste in landfills. ecoLiving Essentials’ shower caps are not only ideal for hotel travel, but also for consumers that frequently use shower caps at home and are looking for an eco-friendly option.
The founders’ goal was to create travel and beauty essentials that are eco-friendly and take away the guilt of using disposable products. ecoLiving Essentials’ travel booties and shower caps biodegrade naturally through microorganisms like bacteria, algae and fungi; are able to co-mingle with trash and recycling, or can be composted; and are BPA-free.
Ensuring that the packaging was environmentally friendly was just as important as the product itself for the company. The bags are made of plant material and are certified biodegradable and compostable, while the labels are printed with soy ink on recycled materials. Additionally, ecoLiving Essentials is committed to being socially responsible by utilizing local resources when available. All of the products and packaging are made in the United States with local materials.
“Products that are environmentally friendly aren’t necessarily affordable for all consumers,” continued Huynh. “Our goal is to provide travelers with products that provide peace of mind when traveling, giving them an eco-friendly option that is also cost-effective. We want to help people make a difference, one step at a time.”
