KINGSEY FALLS, QUEBEC—Cascades Inc. announced that its new greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reduction targets for 2035 have been approved by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). The submitted targets are therefore aligned with the methodology developed by the organization, a partnership between the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP), the United Nations Global Compact, the World Resources Institute (WRI), and the World Wildlife Foundation (WWF). SBTi supports ambitious climate action for the private sector by enabling companies to set science-based GHG emission reduction targets. In doing so, Cascades is once again joining the movement of global companies committed to combating climate change.
In its fifth Sustainable Development Plan, launched last June, Cascades committed to reducing its scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions by 67.2 percent by 2035, compared to 2019. The company also aims for a 41.3 percent reduction in its scope 3 GHG emissions for categories 1 (purchases of goods and services), 3 (activities related to fuels and energy), 4 (upstream transportation and distribution) and 12 (end-of-life management of products sold), again compared to the 2019 reference year.
These new targets are a continuation of the decarbonization approach undertaken by Cascades for several years. Between 2019 and 2025, the company reduced its Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions by 32.6 percent. It is therefore already on track to reach its 2035 target. The efforts made to date already allow Cascades to stand out within its industry. To maintain this momentum, Cascades will continue to implement projects aimed at improving its energy efficiency, reducing the energy consumption of its operations, electrifying certain equipment, and exploring new opportunities for renewable electricity supply.
“The SBTi’s approval of our new greenhouse gas emission reduction targets is a significant recognition of our climate commitment and the credibility of our decarbonization roadmap,” says Hugues Simon, President and CEO of Cascades. “While these targets are ambitious, they are based on solid action plans and initiatives already well-established in our operations. By focusing on innovation, collaboration, and rigorous investment management, we are confident that we can continue to reduce our carbon footprint while creating sustainable value. With the support of our Cascades employees and business partners, we will continue to do our part to contribute to the transition to a lower-carbon economy and a more sustainable future.”
