CARLSBAD, CALIF.—La Costa Resort and Spa announced the resort has been awarded Green Seal’s 2013 Silver distinction, in recognition of recent improvements to the property and operational systems aimed at conserving resources.

“We are very proud and honored to receive Green Seal’s Silver rating,” said Paul McCormick, vice president and general manager of La Costa Resort and Spa. “The team at La Costa is dedicated to protecting our natural resources and we constantly re-evaluate our systems to ensure the resort is as environmentally friendly as possible. Our guests know when they come to La Costa they can feel good about their choice of accommodations.”

La Costa had previously received the Bronze distinction from Green Seal’s environmental certification program in 2011. In order to earn the Silver rating as a lodging property, La Costa had to meet the next level’s criteria within three years of receiving the Bronze ranking.

Categories for improvement included waste minimization, energy efficiency, fresh water management, waste water management and implementing a purchasing policy that was environmentally and socially sensitive.

La Costa implemented a number of changes in order to meet the criteria for the Silver distinction, including the installation of two liquid ozone machines and an eCorrect Food Waste Decomposition System. The resort’s liquid ozone machines create a powerful cleaning solution that is more effective than bleach. They work by infusing ozone into the water that is then used by housekeeping throughout the property, thus eliminating the need for chemical cleaners. The resort’s food and beverage services also began utilizing an eCorrect Food Waste Decomposition System, which dehydrates food waste to produce soil that is suitable for landscape use on the golf course and in hotel plant and flower beds.

La Costa recently unveiled a $50 million property-wide renovation that included redesigned guestrooms, the addition of an adults only pool, EDGE Adult Pool + Cocktails, a spa redesign, expanded athletic club as well as revamped meeting and event space.
