DOMINICA—The Commonwealth of Dominica, the resilient and eco-conscious island nation, has earned a spot in the prestigious list of Top 10 Sustainable Destinations in 2024 by BBC Travel. This recognition emphasizes Dominica’s steadfast commitment to sustainability, resilience, and environmental preservation.

In the face of adversity, particularly Tropical Storm Erika and Hurricane Maria, Dominica demonstrated remarkable resilience, earning praise from BBC Travel for its determined efforts in rebuilding and embracing sustainability. Prime Minister of Dominica, Honorable Dr. Roosevelt Skerrit, is well on his way in transforming Dominica into the “world’s first climate resilient nation” and propelling the nation towards becoming a shining example of sustainable development.

Dominica has embarked on an ambitious journey to fortify its infrastructure against the forces of nature. The continuous construction of climate-resilient homes, hospitals, roads, bridges, the International Airport, and the newly developed Dominica Cable Car Project reflects the nation’s commitment to progress.

Successfully Attracting Eco-conscious Travelers

Dominica boasts lush green rainforests, 365 rivers, the world’s second-largest boiling lake, the Caribbean’s longest hiking trail—Waitukubuli Sea Trail, and a range of eco-tourist resorts. Dominica has strategically developed magnificent eco-friendly resorts, including Secret Bay, Jungle Bay, and the newly constructed Coulibri Ridge, attracting eco-conscious travelers seeking a luxurious yet sustainable experience.

Dominica’s eco-tourism initiatives have garnered international recognition, with Secret Bay receiving acclaim from Travel+Magazine as one of the most beautiful and sustainable resorts. Coulibri Ridge has also secured a spot in Fodor’s list of the “Finest 2024” as one of the world’s 60 most incredible hotels.

In alignment with its resilience vision, Dominica has successfully constructed climate-resilient homes and the Marigot Hospital, equipped with state-of-the-art medical facilities. The Government’s commitment to healthcare extends to the establishment of twelve healthcare centers, ensuring emergency treatment accessibility for those distant from Marigot Hospital.

Green Energy: The Future of Caribbean Sustainability

Dominica is actively reducing its carbon footprint through the construction of a geothermal power plant in the Roseau Valley, set to generate 10 megawatts of power upon completion.

Efforts to Preserve Marine Life

A ground-breaking project in Dominica is the establishment of the world’s first marine protected area for endangered species, known as the Sperm Whale Reserve. Encompassing 300 square miles on the western side, this initiative aims to safeguard marine life and counteract the impacts of climate change, hosting around 500 sperm whales.
