ROCHESTER HILLS, MICH.—C.F. Stinson introduces a breakthrough surface material, the AgION Upholstery Collection; the first, PVC-free upholstery with AgION, a patented, safe, antimicrobial technology that actively targets bacteria on the protected surface of the upholstery for the life of the furniture.

Recently recognized with a Best of NeoCon Gold Award, this new collection is durable and environmentally friendly with a “built-in” ability to naturally and continuously resist bacteria and other microorganisms. In addition, it is impervious to fluids and easy to clean. The PVC-free AgION Collection from C.F. Stinson is an innovative surface material, representing an entirely new category of performance upholstery.

Silver ion technology is already successfully used in medical devices and consumer products alike (catheters, cell phones, sneakers, etc). Yet it is the vision of C.F. Stinson that brings this safe and trusted technology to the contract upholstery world.

A Safe Surface Material

“Unlike nano silver or conventional antimicrobials found in other products, AgION silver ion technology is EPA-registered and FDA-listed,” says Glenn Stinson, vice president of C.F. Stinson. “It has been proven to be safe, with no toxic effects on people, plants, or animals.”

AgION’s antimicrobial attributes are an integral part of the material. Silver ions are embedded within micron-sized carriers called zeolite and then encapsulated into the durable, soft surface of the fabric. Moisture in the air (ambient moisture) or direct contact with moisture (like a sneeze or human contact) activates the release of silver ions to the surface at a slow and steady rate. The AgION antimicrobial will not abrade or wash off. In fact, AgION safely and continuously resists microbes and bacteria for the life of the furniture.

In addition to offering safe, natural and long-lasting antimicrobial protection, the AgION Upholstery Collection is also PVC-free. While similar to conventional vinyl in that it provides a durable and easy solution for high-use upholstery applications; this new product contains no PVCs (polyvinyl chloride) and offers a soft hand with distinctive finish and styling. PVC-based upholstery materials contain additives that, when disposed of by incineration or landfill, can create toxic emissions that are harmful to both humans and the environment.

“There is a growing concern regarding PVCs in our industry,” Stinson says. “By developing this product, the first PVC-free upholstery material with the revolutionary AgION antimicrobial technology, we are offering a safe and useful product that provides great performance and a reduced environmental impact. We are pleased to be able to offer this exciting new product to the industry; it is consistent with our company’s strong commitment to meet the stringent performance requirements of our customers while offering increasingly sustainable solutions.”

C.F. Stinson’s debut AgION Collection is available in four patterns with distinctive grains. Optic and Wink impart contemporary, iridescent styling with subtle graining. Silverado and Sterling offer a more traditional look and feel with rich, leather-esque grains. Each of the patterns is available in an array of colors and are soft and luxurious to the touch.
