This week’s column and e-newsletter are very special to me because they are the 1,000th that I have produced since launching Green Lodging News in July 2006. A big thank you to every person and business who has helped me along the way—suppliers, consultants, public relations professionals, association representatives, students, professors and of course the many thousands of hoteliers and innkeepers who read Green Lodging News and who have reached out to me to share their stories over these almost 20 years. Together we have made it through dips in the economy and of course the COVID-19 pandemic when suppliers pivoted to sell face masks, sanitizer and technologies to ensure a high level of hygiene and indoor air quality.
If I had to choose a favorite from my 1,000 columns it would be one having absolutely nothing to the lodging industry—the birth of my son in August 2011. Today he is just under six feet tall, a straight A student in ninth grade, and one heckuva soccer player.
What has driven me to move forward with Green Lodging News over the years has been the pure enjoyment of writing about topics that interest me and hopefully you as well. While I have never worked as a hotelier, I have tried to put myself in those shoes as I have developed and edited the 20,000 articles that appear on the Green Lodging News website.
Green Business is Smart Business
I see my role as a gardener planting seeds of ideas that help you run more property more efficiently, more creatively, more responsibly, and more profitably. At the end of the day, green business is very smart business. I know thousands of you believe this. It is much better to be an excited, optimistic futurist than someone clinging to old, worn out—usually polluting—ideas.
I still get so excited about the advancements pushing our industry toward sustainability—a filter that removes microplastics from drinking water, a biodigester that turns food waste into fertilizer, a company powering up to 100 percent of its electricity with solar energy, companies shooting for carbon neutrality or negativity.
To all of you who have embraced a way of business prioritizing the welfare of people and planet, I celebrate you and hopefully you celebrate your accomplishments as often as possible.
Keep your story ideas, press releases and guest columns coming. And to those suppliers who have considered Green Lodging News advertising but have yet to move forward with it, give me a call. Let’s help each other and help to make our world a better place. I can be reached at (813) 510-3868 or by email at greenlodgingnews@gmail.com.
