CRANS-MONTANA—Six Senses Crans-Montana has welcomed for the first time a flock of Valais Blacknose sheep to graze on the resort grounds, bringing a charming new addition to the alpine landscape. Their arrival marks the beginning of a new chapter for the resort, inspiring a collection of guest experiences and initiatives, including the introduction of a new hotel mascot.

For centuries, Valais Blacknose sheep have been an enduring symbol of the Swiss Alps and the Valais region, easily recognized by their distinctive black faces and thick white fleece. Beyond their charm, these animals play an important role in preserving the Alpine landscape, naturally maintaining mountain meadows and supporting local biodiversity.

The sheep have made Six Senses Crans-Montana their home for the season, reflecting the resort’s commitment to sustainability, local heritage, and meaningful connections with nature. By helping care for the surrounding landscape through natural grazing, the sheep contribute to the preservation of valuable habitats for native flora and fauna while offering guests an authentic way to engage with the traditions and environment of the region.

“Sustainability should not remain behind the scenes; it should be experienced authentically,” says Jean-Yves Blatt, General Manager of Six Senses Crans-Montana. “With the Valais Blacknose sheep, we not only want to offer a unique guest experience but also demonstrate how respect for nature and responsible luxury naturally come together within our resort. Welcoming these animals is deeply meaningful to us and marks the beginning of a long journey together.”

Leonard the Blacknose: The Hotel’s New Ambassador

Leading the flock is Leonard the Blacknose, who will serve as the resort’s official ambassador. As a recognizable presence on property throughout the summer season, Leonard embodies the resort’s connection to the Valais region and its commitment to creating authentic experiences rooted in place.

A Valais Blacknose plush toy inspired by the resort’s newest residents will be available in all 77 rooms, suites, and residences. Guests may take one home through an adoption program for $45, with all proceeds benefiting the hotel’s Sustainability Fund. Through this fund, Six Senses supports environmental and social initiatives in the region, including the Organization for the Protection of Alpine Pastures, an initiative dedicated to protecting Alpine grazing lands and promoting peaceful coexistence between shepherds and wildlife in the Alps. The organization’s mission is to preserve traditional ways of life while strengthening long-term ecological balance.

Sustainability in Action

Sustainability is embedded throughout the guest experience at Six Senses Crans-Montana, from biodiversity initiatives such as nature-conscious grazing practices and on-site beekeeping to hands-on learning at the Earth Lab. There, guests can explore the resort’s approach to waste reduction, including workshops that transform used cooking oil into scented candles. Behind the scenes, the resort is committed to minimizing single-use plastics, supporting local producers, and prioritizing seasonal sourcing as part of its broader environmental stewardship efforts.
