Green Lodging News has just turned 18 years old. A big thank you to all the companies and other organizations that have supported this publication with advertising all these years. Green Lodging News would not be where it is without them. Be sure to support those companies that advertise and tell them that you found them here at Green Lodging News—whether on the website or in an e-blast that you receive each week. By doing that, you will help keep Green Lodging News sustainable for years to come. And, if you represent a company looking to reach an audience already interested/invested in a green way of doing business, reach out to me at (813) 510-3868, or at greenlodgingnews@gmail.com. Our website currently welcomes 44,000 different visitors each month and our e-newsletter and Green Supplier Spotlight reach 19,850 subscribers.
Green Lodging News would not be where it is today without the editorial contributions of hundreds of industry consultants, suppliers, public relations experts, and others with a stake in green lodging. Keep those story ideas and press releases coming. I am also always open to guest column contributions. Guest columns are posted every two weeks on our website. And yes, please do tell your colleagues to subscribe to Green Lodging News. There is a place to do that on the Green Lodging News homepage.
Back in 1991, while an editor at Hotel & Motel Management magazine, I wrote a regular feature under the heading of “Eco Views”. Back then the now widespread towel/linen reuse program was in its early years, and it was big news if a hotel launched a recycling program. “Green” was the word and “sustainability” had yet to enter mainstream conversation. “Corporate Social Responsibility” and “People. Planet. Profit.” were part of the discussion early on but ESG (environmental, social, and governance) was not coined until 2004.
Not long after I launched Green Lodging News in 2006, I advocated for 100 percent nonsmoking rooms. Many hoteliers resisted that idea. It is one example of how much things have changed.
The Bar Just Keeps Getting Higher
Advancements in science, recognition of the impact of a changing climate and our impact on it, steps forward in technology, inspirational leadership, consumer and societal pressures, regulatory updates, and much more have resulted in what we consider to be green lodging today. Undoubtedly, the sustainability bar continues to be raised as time passes, and that is a good thing for everyone. Going green is good for the planet and good for business as well.
The more than 14,000 articles in the Green Lodging News online archive reflect the evolution of our industry when it comes to sustainability. It is exciting on a daily basis to read about the activities and progress of our industry’s leading companies and associations.
While we have come so far, we still have a long way to go—on both the operations and design sides. With your help I will continue to cover the news of our successes and challenges.
Thank you again for all your support these last 18 years.
