MONTEREY, CALIF.—Portola Hotel & Spa, Monterey’s first and only Silver LEED EB certified hotel, announced its donation to Santa Cruz’s Bonny Doon Elementary School for the installation of its new 31 kilowatt solar array. The new solar panels, sponsored by The Offset Project’s Monterey Bay Carbon Fund and other members of the community, reduce the school’s electricity bill by 10 percent and allows for students to monitor renewable usage in the classroom. The project is the result of Portola Hotel & Spa extending its commitment to renewable clean energy beyond the property and into the local community.

Bonny Doon Elementary School is the first solar project completed through the Monterey Bay Carbon Fund. Bonny Doon’s solar installation will also allow two Cabrillo students to receive job training in solar installation and financing, while simultaneously earning college credits outside of class.

Portola Hotel & Spa’s ongoing partnership with The Offset Project will continue to provide important educational opportunities for local students, generate new green jobs and economic growth for the community, and help more local schools and nonprofit organizations obtain the advantages of money-saving renewable energy installations.

Other strategic partners in the Carbon Fund include: Monterey Bay Regional Climate Action Compact, RC Cubed, United States Green Building Council, the County of Santa Cruz and The Offset Project.
