NEW YORK—Newsweek has released its list of America’s Greenest Companies 2027. The five companies landing on the list under “Hospitality” include Aramark, The Cheesecake factory, Chipotle, Choice Hotels, and Pebblebrook Hotel Trust. Under “Real Estate Services”: Sunstone Hotel Investors.
As environmental responsibility becomes an increasingly important measure of business leadership in 2027, Newsweek’s America’s Greenest Companies ranking highlights organizations making measurable progress in reducing their environmental impact.
Developed in partnership with sustainability data experts Plant-A Insights Group, the ranking evaluates companies across a number of data points, including greenhouse gas emissions, water usage, waste generation and sustainability disclosure and commitments.
For readers, including job seekers, the ranking offers a data-driven look at how companies are addressing environmental challenges—and provides a useful starting point for understanding which organizations are demonstrating transparency and measurable action on sustainability.
Methodology
America’s Greenest Companies 2027 recognizes the top 650 U.S. companies for their performance in environmental sustainability. The ranking was developed by Newsweek and Plant-A Insights Group in partnership with GIST Impact, using publicly available sustainability data from both public and private companies.
More than 6,000 companies were included in the review. To be considered, companies were required to maintain a U.S. headquarters and have publicly disclosed sustainability data available as of June 30, 2026. Companies were also screened according to the European Union (EU) Benchmark exclusion criteria, which exclude businesses with significant involvement in activities such as controversial weapons, tobacco, nuclear weapons and energy, coal, oil and gas, and highly carbon-intensive electricity generation.
Each eligible company was evaluated across more than 25 sustainability parameters organized into four key categories: Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions, Water Usage, Waste Generation, and Commitment & Disclosure.
To ensure a fair comparison regardless of company size, absolute environmental data was first divided by revenue to calculate intensity metrics. Companies were then scored for each parameter based on their percentile position relative to all other evaluated organizations. If a company did not disclose data for a specific metric, it automatically received a score of zero. These individual scores were then combined to calculate the overall category results and determine the final ranking.
Why Some May Have Been Excluded
The media monitoring platform Critical Mention by Onclusive was utilized to identify whether companies were implicated in environmental wrongdoing, greenwashing or serious ecological misconduct between August 31, 2024, and August 31, 2026. Any company found engaging in these practices was subsequently excluded from the final America’s Greenest Companies 2027 ranking list. Newsweek and Plant-A Insights Group conducted multiple iterations of the media monitoring process to validate all exclusions and ensure the accuracy of the results.
The 650 highest-scoring eligible companies were recognized by Newsweek and Plant-A Insights Group as America’s Greenest Companies 2027.
The exclusion of a company from this list is not a reflection of its performance and is not disputed. Plant-A Insights Group has a strict no-pay-to-play policy. All awards are based on independent research and unbiased data analysis. No applications.
