Over the last 20 years or more there have been attempts to position a certain number of rooms—perhaps an entire floor—as somehow more health-focused. Most of the time, hoteliers would sell those rooms for a premium. One company, for example, offers a program for hotels that enables them to offer a chunk of rooms with air purification, the application of a bacteriostatic barrier to all hard and soft surfaces that prevents microbes and allergens from growing, the disinfection of the heating and cooling system, mattress and pillow encasements, and more. I may be wrong, but I do not recall a hotel dedicating 100 percent of room inventory to such a program. That is why a recent initiative by the Assouline family, the owner of the Garden Hotel & Resort in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., caught my attention.
Every one of the 155 guestrooms at the hotel now have ClearVanity under-sink filtration systems designed to help reduce chlorine, odor, sediment, heavy metals, and select common impurities before water reaches the faucet. In addition, all guestrooms feature ClearShower filtered shower heads featuring a 15-stage filtration system designed to reduce chlorine and other impurities before they contact skin and hair.
The technology, which incorporates UV lighting disinfection, stems from CLEAR INC.’s extensive experience delivering advanced water purification solutions in large-scale residential, commercial, and mixed-use developments around the globe.
Guests can fill up water bottles at the bathroom sink with peace of mind and be free of hair-damaging chemicals in the shower. Signage on the bathroom mirror explains the filtration upgrades. The investment demonstrates a high level of care about guest wellness.
For large hotels there is the option of a whole-building filtration system.
Gil Blutrich, Co-Founder & President of CLEAR INC., says his company has more than 5,000 installations in five countries but the Garden Hotel & Resort is the first lodging establishment to deploy the under-sink and shower systems.
Subscription-based Program
“Our program is subscription based,” Blutrich says. “We install the systems at no cost and then hotels pay $15 per month per room. It is a very cost-effective solution.”
What the owner of the Garden Hotel & Resort is doing is a great idea and he has plans to do the same in a hotel in Miami Beach that is scheduled to open toward the end of 2027.
Price being even, which hotel would you rather stay at? One with filtered water or one without it?
Have you done something similar at your lodging establishment? If so, I would love to learn about it. I can be reached at greenlodgingnews@gmail.com.
