MIAMI—Bahia Principe Hotels & Resorts, a leader in sustainable tourism, invited eco-conscious travelers to celebrate Earth Day by embracing its unwavering commitment to environmental stewardship. The all-inclusive hotel group is proud to highlight its most recent recognition: Bahia Principe Grand El Portillo in the Dominican Republic was awarded the Sustainable Tourism Business Award by the Samaná Tourism Cluster. This prestigious award celebrates the hotel’s ongoing efforts in resource management, waste reduction, and its dedication to environmental protection—marking the second time a Bahia Principe property has been honored with this recognition.

Bahia Principe’s commitment to sustainability is driven by the “We Are Ecocentric” movement and the work of the Eco-Bahia Foundation, which has been implementing impactful conservation projects since 1999. In 2023 alone, over 198,000 sea turtle hatchlings were released, 2,197 nests managed, and coral reef restoration efforts expanded through a partnership with OCEANUS A.C. These initiatives protect the biodiversity of the Caribbean and actively engage local communities and travelers alike.

Across its properties in Mexico, Jamaica, and the Dominican Republic, Bahia Principe is leading eco-conscious practices that reflect its commitment to sustainability:

  • Grand Samana: Situated in one of the Caribbean’s most biodiverse regions, this resort offers whale watching, birdwatching, and other nature-based activities while promoting local conservation efforts.
  • Luxury Akumal: This lush beachfront resort invites guests to participate in its turtle release program, an initiative run by the Eco-Bahia Foundation to protect endangered species. The resort’s commitment to habitat restoration is demonstrated by the planting of over 6,000 trees since 2021, supporting local biodiversity.
  • Grand Jamaica: Set along pristine beaches, the resort fosters marine conservation with eco-tourism activities like snorkeling and educational beach clean-ups. It also features a native plant nursery to promote environmental education.

Bahia Principe has also made substantial progress on its sustainability roadmap. The brand reduced its water consumption by 8.9 percent in 2023 and aims to cut its carbon footprint by 60 percent by 2030, reaching net-zero emissions by 2050. Last year, the brand generated over 249 million kWh of energy and launched a Circular Economy Department to support zero-landfill goals. Notably, its properties have already recycled more than 26,000 tons of waste since 2017, with 5.3 million kg recycled in 2023 alone.

Governance, People, & Planet

Guided by Grupo Piñero’s 2022–2030 Sustainability Strategy, Bahia Principe’s actions are structured around three fundamental pillars: governance, people, and planet. These pillars ensure the brand integrates environmental, social, and ethical criteria into every decision—supporting its long-term vision for a regenerative tourism model that adds value for all stakeholders. The company is committed to transparent, ethical leadership and is adapting its operations to climate risks through a sustainable and circular business model based on energy and climate, circularity, and natural capital.

Looking ahead, Bahia Principe will continue to consolidate sustainability governance, drive climate transition, promote diversity and inclusion, and strengthen its alliances. Through the Eco-Bahia Foundation and the “We Are Ecocentric” movement, it remains steadfast in its mission to improve lives, protect ecosystems, and contribute to a more just and sustainable future.
