WASHINGTON, D.C.—The Sustainable Travel Leadership Network (STLN) introduced TravelWell, a new sustainability tool, at a recent event co-hosted by Virgin Holidays and Condé Nast Traveler in Montego Bay, Jamaica.

TravelWell will help the travel industry to make informed decisions on investments in destination development. The tool will also encourage sustainability at the destination level, helping governments to assess and benchmark their environmental and social practices and policies, while providing specific guidelines for sustainable destination management.

Drawing from the Global Sustainable Tourism Criteria for Destinations, the self-assessment tool is a survey of 20 key indicators that will allow destinations to evaluate where they are on their sustainability journey.

“The Globus family of brands is thrilled to be involved with the launch of TravelWell,” said Mary Cox, Globus’ director of human resources. “This tool will allow our teams to make better informed decisions about including destinations committed to sustainability in our travel portfolio.”

An Incentive to Destinations

“The travel industry really needs a solution like TravelWell,” added Jamie Sweeting, chairman of Sustainable Travel International. “It will provide an incentive to destinations, helping them to demonstrate and communicate their sustainability initiatives and good practices, and ultimately, enable them to be recognized and rewarded for them, increasing their competitiveness in the marketplace.”

The STLN is a group of leading companies from major travel industry sectors, which have joined forces to share knowledge and experiences. Convened by leading nonprofit Sustainable Travel International, this unique collaboration is working together to provide innovative guidance that can lead to solutions for today’s industry challenges.

Businesses and partners participating in the STLN include: Abercrombie & Kent, Carnival Corp. & plc, Cathay Pacific Airlines, Condé Nast Traveler magazine, Fairmont Hotels & Resorts, Finnair Group, Globus family of brands, Loews Hotels, Micato Safaris, Pacific Beachcomber Resorts & Cruises, Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd., Sabre Holdings, United Airlines, and Virgin Holidays.
