In hospitality, differentiation is everything. A guest’s first impression is shaped by every unique amenity and offering. From curated mini bars to spas, each element crafts the guest experience from check in to check out. At Full Leaf Tea Company, we believe a thoughtfully designed tea program is one of the most elegant, low-risk, high-return strategies a hotel or resort can adopt. It enhances wellness, elevates branding, delights guests, and yes, it can even boost profits.
I might be biased, but when I stay at hotels, I love looking at the tea menu. The tea offerings have the potential to say something about the hotel/resort itself. Too often, tea services are an afterthought: a dusty box of tea bags or two uninspired options by the kettle.
I feel like there is a missed opportunity when this is done. Not everyone is a “tea snob” like me, but a curated tea program, featuring loose leaf teas, wellness blends, and guided tastings, could help the property stand out. Like hotel ratings, there are tea quality ratings as well. When I see organic loose-leaf tea, it always leaves a feeling of intention, quality, and high-end experience. Guests can sense these details also whether they realize it or not. High-quality loose-leaf tea can bring feelings of elevation, relaxation and wellness.
Shows Commitment to Guest Well-Being
Incorporating an in-room tea service is one of the most cost-effective wellness amenities available. Offering calming chamomile, detox blends, or a wellness-focused “tea menu” shows your commitment to guest well-being beyond the comfort of their room. Tea is relatively inexpensive, which allows for great profit margins. For spa, retreat, and boutique properties, this offering seems like a “no brainer”.
Tea can be an experience. Afternoon tea, for example, creates energy in the quiet window between lunch and dinner. It can be like Happy Hour but in a wellness focused way. Guided tea tastings or “tea flights” could even become paid activities, adding both experiential value and provide additional revenue to the property. I always look for a listing of activities when I travel. Vacations and getaways are meant to be memorable. Tea ceremonies or tea parties could be just that and more.
What Should Tea Offerings Look Like?
When it comes to deciding what teas to offer, balance is key. When I look at tea menus, I look for a well-rounded offering. I suggest at least one black, green, white, oolong, and herbal blend. Some guests want strong, caffeinated classics like Organic Assam or Organic Sencha Green Tea while others prefer caffeine-free or functional herb blends like our Organic Relieve Stress Tea or Organic Beauty Me Tea. Focus on quality over quantity. Full-leaf (whole-leaf) teas retain flavor and aroma better than dust or fannings (crushed pieces, leftovers from full-leaf teas), which is often found in pre bagged teas. Full-leaf teas result in a cup guests will remember.
Once you have your menu, teach and train staff members with basic brewing knowledge and flavor notes. Our Full Leaf Tea Steeping Guide is a great resource. Even a simple “steep for four minutes” or a story about where the tea is sourced adds value. Guests love narrative education and a feeling of being “in the know”. Tea naturally carries rich cultural and agricultural stories from all over the world, so sharing tea knowledge with guests is endless.
Similar to the other offerings unique to your hotel, the presentation matters. Premium tea deserves premium presentation. Use teapots or infusers rather than generic pre-filled bags. Full Leaf also offers empty teabags allowing customers to decide how much tea to steep. It also provides a way for making their own blends by mixing teas and herbs in a single tea bag. I would consider tea flights, samplers, or an inviting tea bar that encourages exploration.
To keep the experience fresh and new, rotate teas with the seasons or tie them to wellness goals, such as Organic Immunity Blend in winter, vibrant fruit blends like Organic Tropical Escape in summer or Organic Live Fit for fitness goals. Seasonal menus keep the program fresh and give repeat guests something new to look forward to and discover.
Revenue Opportunities
So, now that the tea program is running, how do you generate revenue? Tea can be integrated into daily menus, spa treatments, pillow menus, and wellness packages. Offer full retail packaging in the lobby shop or spa boutique so guests can take home a memory, and you gain an additional revenue stream.
Here are a few key points as to why I believe a wellness tea program is key:
Tea has long been associated with health, and modern research supports many of those traditions. Wellness has become much more of a focus over the last decade, and I believe it will only continue to grow as consumers are “kicking coffee”, switching from soda, and in general looking for natural remedies and ways of improving their everyday lives. Here’s a quick breakdown:
- Green tea: Rich in catechins (EGCG), known for antioxidant support and metabolic benefits.
- Black tea: Contains theaflavins that support heart health; offers steady, moderate caffeine.
- White tea: Minimally processed, high in antioxidants, and gentle on digestion.
- Oolong & pu-erh: Traditionally linked with digestion and metabolic support.
- Herbal infusions:
– Chamomile: calming, supports relaxation.
– Peppermint: soothing for digestion.
– Ginger & turmeric: anti-inflammatory and warming.
– Rooibos: caffeine-free, antioxidant-rich. - Wellness blends: Full Leaf Tea Company combines herbs to support immunity, sleep, stress relief, detox and more. They are one of a kind crafted wellness teas specifically designed for improving the way we live. When presented as a complement to rest and rejuvenation, tea enhances the wellness positioning of any property.
A tea program contributes far more than physical health benefits:
- Ritual & mindfulness: The act of steeping and sipping encourages guests to pause and breathe, a rare luxury on its own.
- Emotional connection: Sharing the story behind a blend or sourcing region deepens a guest’s relationship with your brand.
- Perceived luxury: Just as craft coffee elevated hotel standards, curated tea signals thoughtfulness and premium service.
- Memorability: Afternoon tea or tasting experiences become social moments that guests photograph, share, and remember long after checkout.
A robust tea program can be both a way to set you apart from the rest and a revenue driver:
- Incremental food and beverage revenue: Afternoon tea services generate strong margins, particularly when paired with pastries, sparkling wine, or small bites.
- Upsells & packages: Tea tastings or wellness pairings can be sold as add-ons to spa and retreat experiences.
- Retail sales: Retail packaged teas, gift sets, or seasonal blends sold in boutiques provide profitable take-home options.
- Brand lift: Enhanced positioning may justify higher room rates or improve occupancy by appealing to wellness-focused travelers.
- Low unit cost: Loose leaf tea offers high perceived value at minimal cost, which means great profit margins.
A well-designed tea program is more than an amenity, it’s a strategy. It adds wellness, ritual, and story to your guest experience, while offering new revenue channels for your property. At Full Leaf Tea Company, we’ve seen firsthand how premium loose-leaf tea can transform ordinary service into something memorable. By offering a tea program, you would be tapping into the senses of your guests. They will experience the unique flavors and smells of loose-leaf tea. Guests will also get to prepare the tea in different ways and hear about the history or flavor profiles of each tea from staff.
If your hotel or resort is ready to steep a new layer of value into the guest journey, a tea program may be the perfect blend of experience and profitability.
