RYE BROOK, N.Y.—Doral Arrowwood, located in Westchester, N.Y., announced that it has partnered with American DG Energy of Waltham, Mass. American DG will serve as the hotel’s clean energy supplier. As part of this initiative, Doral Arrowwood will soon receive a significant portion of its energy from a 375 kW combined heat and power (CHP) system. Using energy produced by the CHP system, Doral Arrowwood will reduce its carbon emissions by up to 1,800 tons per year or 43 percent. The partnership is the latest addition to Doral Arrowwood’s green initiatives, which include measures to reduce energy usage, increase recycling and use biodegradable products throughout the hotel.

“At Doral Arrowwood we are committed to our community and environment,” said Steve Mabus, general manager, Doral Arrowwood. “We are looking forward to taking the next step in making our hotel and conference center even more eco-friendly.”

Due to the superior efficiency of the 375 kW CHP system, the property’s carbon footprint will be significantly reduced:

• Carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions reduced by 1854 tons/year (43 percent reduction vs. separate heat and power);
• Nitrogen oxides (NOX) emissions reduced by 4.54 tons/year (82 percent reduction);
• Sulfur dioxide (SO2) emissions nearly eliminated (reduced by 8.19 tons/yr = 99.88 percent reduction);
• Fuel consumption reduced by 21,282 MMBtu/year (34 percent reduction);
• Potential for acid rain reduced due to reduction of nitrogen oxides and sulfur dioxide, which are active agents in acid rain;
• Carbon dioxide emissions reductions equivalent to that absorbed by 382 acres of forest; and
• Carbon dioxide emissions reductions equivalent to removing 306 cars from the road.

“Businesses are realizing that going green by using clean energy provides significant environmental benefits,” said Barry Sanders, president and COO of American DG Energy. “We are excited to install our On-Site Utility energy solution at Doral Arrowwood and appreciate their commitment to reducing the hotel’s impact on the environment.”

Heat Exchangers Replace Water Heaters

In addition to its CHP system, Doral Arrowwood has taken several additional steps to make the hotel more environmentally friendly. As part of its green measures, Doral Arrowwood is using green products and biodegradable products on a daily basis throughout the hotel. Other eco-friendly measures include: the use of Energy Star compact fluorescent light bulbs for 75 percent of its lighting; replacing six of the resort’s eight water heaters with energy efficient heat exchangers; and involvement in a linen and towel re-use program.

Doral Arrowwood has also redesigned its on-property recycling center. As part of the redesign, the hotel has installed recycling bins at all back of the house and refreshment break areas for disposal of office paper, beverage containers and newspapers. Property-wide initiatives have also been further enhanced, including the use of staff uniforms made from recycled materials. The new uniforms are made from 100 percent recycled polyester produced from post-consumer waste. One suit is made from approximately 25 recycled 2-liter plastic bottles.

The CHP project is scheduled to begin in four to six weeks and its estimated completion date is November 30, 2010. To learn more, visit www.DoralArrowwood.com and www.americandg.com.
