As highlighted in my weekly column this past week, Earth Hour will take place on Saturday, March 25, from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m. local time. Pranav Jampani, Director of Sustainability at The Venetian | The Palazzo | Sands Expo, has been sharing the Las Vegas properties’ Earth Hour plans with me. The Venetian | The Palazzo | Sands Expo will celebrate Earth Hour in grand style in the Doge’s Palace plaza, in front of The Venetian. The resort’s official “Earth Hour DJ” will lead a countdown to the 8:30 p.m. start of Earth Hour, when all exterior building lights on The Venetian and The Palazzo will be turned off for one hour. Team Members and guests will come together (while enjoying music and inspired Earth Hour beverages) to create a planet Earth “mural” on the plaza using LED tea lights, beginning at 8 p.m. There will be gondoliers doing performances as well. Green roses will be handed out to guests who take a gondola ride. Seed packets will be distributed for guests and Team Members. The resorts will be turning off non-essential lighting for one hour, including exterior lighting, rooftop signage and façade features. For the remainder of the evening (after Earth Hour), the resort will turn its exterior tower signs green.

A school beautification project will take place on the day of Earth Hour where Team Members will work together to refresh a local elementary school and its garden.

In addition, Team Members will be encouraged to choose a healthy, active and sustainable lifestyle by participating in a Sands ECO360 “Spring Step up Challenge”, a four-week walking event where participants will challenge each other to reach the goal of at least 150,000 steps during the challenge period, with an opportunity to win prizes. The slogan is “Reduce Your Carbon Footprint = Improve Your Health & Wellness”. Las Vegas Sands Corp. is promoting activities like taking the stairs, using an active method of transportation to a destination, planting a garden or helping out in a community garden, participating in a park cleanup event and more. Prizes include an iWatch, FitBit, NutriBullet and the grand prize is a Peleton bike.
