Looking Forward to This Year’s International Hotel, Motel + Restaurant Show

Because I will be attending the upcoming International Hotel, Motel + Restaurant Show (IHMRS) in New York City, November 10 to 13, I have already begun to receive invitations from vendors to stop by their exhibit booths. It is exciting to hear from so many new and returning “green” exhibitors. Will you be attending this year’s event? I highly recommend it as a way to learn about the latest eco-friendly products and services that can help you reduce energy and water consumption, clean green, and more responsibly handle “waste.”

I have been attending the IHMRS since 1989 and have missed just a few shows since then. Early on, there was rarely even a recycling wastebasket to be seen but today concern about sustainability can be seen throughout the show in every product category.

Joining the IHMRS once again this year as an adjacent show is Boutique Design New York from November 11 to 12. Exhibit space sold out early for this event that features products ranging from furniture to lighting to fabrics. Adding this event to the IHMRS schedule has turned out to be a great move as it has added new energy to an IHMRS show that was once significantly larger.

Focus on Carbon Metrics Reporting

When not putting on miles walking the trade show floor this year, I will be attending the Hospitality Leadership Forum on November 10. This year’s Forum will feature a session from 2:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. entitled, “Reporting Your Hotel Carbon Metrics, Responding to Green RFPs.” Moderated by Pat Maher, green consultant, American Hotel & Lodging Assn., and partner, The Maher Group, the session will feature four panelists. The panelists will include: George, Favaloro, managing director, PwC; Faith Taylor, senior vice president, Sustainability & Innovation, Wyndham Worldwide; Eric Ricaurte, principal, Greenview; and Maury Zimring, director, corporate responsibility, InterContinental Hotels Group.

Here is the description for the session: “Over the last 18 months, the World Travel & Tourism Council and the International Tourism Partnership, along with more than 20 hotel companies, have come together and developed standard metrics for hospitality carbon reporting. Come learn the just released industry-wide common unified language for hotels reporting carbon footprints on meetings and/or hotel stays. You’ll also learn strategies to start applying immediately, particularly when responding to Request for Proposals (RFPs).”

When attending the Forum, also be sure to catch the keynote luncheon at 12:45 p.m. It will feature Anthony Melchiorri, host, Travel Channel’s “Hotel Impossible,” as the moderator of a discussion entitled, “Back to Basics.”

Concurrent with the IHMRS on November 11, a Hospitality Sustainability Workshop will be held at the InterContinental Barclay Hotel from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. It will be hosted by Hervé Houdré, general manager of the Barclay. The workshop is for faculty only and is limited to the first 25 registrants. To sign up, e-mail dac2@psu.edu.

I have accumulated many great memories of the IHMRS over the last 23 years and am looking forward to yet another exciting event. Be sure to look for coverage at www.greenlodgingnews.com. I hope to see you there.
