CYPRESS, CALIF.—Earth Friendly Products, the maker of ECOS environmentally friendly cleaning products and a leader in sustainable business practices, announces that after six years of actively reducing its water usage, the company is now “water neutral.” Water neutrality is a measure of zero net water usage achieved through reducing water use and funding programs that restore water to critically depleted ecosystems. Water neutrality is part of Earth Friendly Products’ long-term commitment to minimize its environmental impacts. In addition to water neutrality, Earth Friendly Products achieved carbon neutrality in 2013 and Zero Waste Platinum certification at all its facilities in 2015, making it the first manufacturing company to achieve that distinction.

Earth Friendly Products has been actively implementing water-saving projects for several years and has made water-efficient manufacturing and eliminating water waste top priorities. By installing water-efficient fixtures and weather-based irrigation controllers, quickly repairing leaky pipes and valves, and dry-sweeping floors, Earth Friendly Products gets the most out of every drop of water and dramatically reduces its impact on the environment.

In addition to direct water conservation efforts, Earth Friendly Products offsets its remaining water footprint by supporting water conservation programs for threatened rivers, streams and wetlands, and depleted groundwater supplies. With the purchase of water restoration certificates through the Bonneville Environmental Foundation, Earth Friendly Products has returned over 10.6 million gallons of water to critically dewatered rivers and wetlands in North America.

Demonstration of Company’s Commitment

“Achieving water neutrality illustrates our company’s commitment to sustainability and reducing our water footprint,” explains Earth Friendly Products CEO Kelly Vlahakis-Hanks. “We’re enormously proud of this milestone and hope it will serve as a significant step forward in restoring water to depleted ecosystems and in our fight to protect the resources of this precious planet.”

Water restoration certificates, like those from the Bonneville Environmental Foundation, fund programs that develop new irrigation infrastructure to conserve and divert less water to benefit fish, wildlife, recreation, and water quality. The certificates also support programs that repair landscape to channel rainfall and runoff and restore dammed and rerouted water channels, install high-tech control systems to conserve water, reduce pollutants, and replenish river flows, groundwater, and habitats.

Earth Friendly Products’ water neutrality program supports:

•    The Sacramento River Wetland Enhancement Project, which helps keep fields flooded to sustain critical wetland habitat in California’s Central Valley and provides 10,000 acres of habitat each year for hundreds of thousands of migrating shorebirds that rely on the region;

•    The Middle Deschutes River Project, which helps sustain healthy river flows and foster a healthy ecosystem for the red-band trout, otters, ospreys, and myriad wildlife species that inhabit this 35-mile section of Washington’s iconic Deschutes River and depend on clean, healthy flows of water;

•    The Yampa River Project, which helps restore significant flow to Colorado’s Yampa River during the critical summer period to support the local recreation economy and protect native and sport fisheries; and

•    The Upper Dotta Meadow Project, which provides funding to help restore water within a 253-acre critically dewatered meadow ecosystem in California’s Sierra Nevada Mountains, an area that was once a vibrant wetland meadow ecosystem with healthy streams and rich wildlife habitat containing robust trout populations and diverse bird species.

“In addition to managing our own water usage and supporting water conservation programs, we also want to set an example for our partners, so they will reduce their own water footprint,” says Dr. Nadereh Afsharmanesh, Vice President of Sustainability and Education at Earth Friendly Products. “Our goal is to bring all stakeholders together to lower the environmental and social impacts of our water use and to work together to create a more sustainable planet.”

With its announcement of water neutrality, Earth Friendly Products hopes to serve as a model of sustainable business practices for other manufacturing companies to follow.
