BEVERLY HILLS, CALIF.—During the month of April, children across the United States, Canada, Europe and Latin America are encouraging their communities and each other to collect as many recyclable bottles and cans as possible to raise money for essential school and youth community programs. This school recycling fundraiser—appropriately named “Cans and Bottles for a Cause” is part of the award-winning Doubletree Hotels Teaching Kids to CARE community outreach program, which aims to raise awareness about the rewards of environmental consciousness in everyday life by fostering a sense of activism, empowerment and reward. The five schools or youth organizations that collect the largest number of cans and bottles during the month of April also will be eligible to receive one of five $2,500 grants from Doubletree Hotels to benefit the school program of their choice.

Founded in 2002, Teaching Kids to CARE is a community-based outreach initiative that has connected local Doubletree hotels with more than 150,000 students in local elementary schools and youth organizations. Teaching Kids to CARE educates children about the importance of making environmentally conscious decisions for their community and their world at the earliest ages.

“With the challenges of today’s youth education and enrichment programs in serious jeopardy across North America and around the world, Doubletree has designed our annual Teaching Kids to CARE spring campaign to reward students and their schools in a variety of different ways,” says Mary Beth Parks, vice president—brand marketing for Doubletree Hotels. “Not only will students be equipped with the personal knowledge of how they can be environmentally responsible as part of this program, they also will learn about the benefits of reducing the amount of items that enter our landfills in their communities. Kids also will see the rewards of recycling through the chance to raise money for a valuable program at their school or local youth organization.”

Throughout the month of April, students will work with Doubletree hotel teams in more than 100 communities in an attempt to gather plastic bottles and aluminum cans from family, friends and their community that can be transformed into needed funds for school libraries, music and art programs, after-school sports activities and much more. To illustrate and promote the lessons they’ve learned through an educator-approved lesson plan, students will put their artistic skills to work by decorating a series of “CARE Collection Containers,” which will be placed around their school and in select Doubletree hotels for can and bottle collection. All proceeds from recycled cans and bottles collected by each Doubletree hotel and student team will be given back to the hotel’s adopted school or youth organization to be used towards the program of their choice.

Communities and travelers can also do their part to better the environment and benefit local schools and youth organizations by bringing their own plastic bottles and aluminum cans to collection locations at their local participating Doubletree hotel. Additional information about participating hotels and special events throughout the month of April will be posted regularly on the Doubletree Hotels Twitter newsfeed site, which is available to the public at www.twitter.com/doubletreehtls.
