LOS ANGELES—Commercial carpet manufacturer Bentley Prince Street, Inc. announced that it has received a third-party verified Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) for its broadloom products. This achievement marks the first time a North American broadloom carpet product has received an EPD, the international gold standard for illustrating the various aspects of a product’s performance.
“The significance of this EPD verification is the amount of detail and transparency required, providing the most accurate, objective picture available of a product’s true environmental impact,” said Anthony Minite, president of Bentley Prince Street. “This is the best impartial tool available to provide customers with a real benchmark to measure all aspects of a product’s sustainability to help guide their purchasing decisions.”
An EPD is the only third-party verification system that takes into account the complete life cycle assessment of a product’s environmental impact, encompassing raw materials, production, installation, use and end of use. Based on the ISO 14025 standard, verification requires an unprecedented level of confidential product information and analysis that has never before been made public or used to back up environmental claims. Metrics reported include an analysis of renewable versus non-renewable energy use, material resources, water consumption and waste at each stage of the product’s life. It also evaluates human health concerns, emissions, hazardous substances and recycled content.
