Ten Years of Hard Work Leads to What You See Today

Losing your job can be the best thing that ever happens to you—if you strategically move on from that separation, do not feel sorry for yourself, and use your imagination to create something positive and fulfilling. It was almost 15 years ago that I did lose my job with a well-known industry trade publication. It took me several years to figure out what I wanted to do and in July 2006 Green Lodging News was born. So yes, this month I celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Green Lodging News website and e-newsletter.

What a ride it has been over the last decade—covering the lodging industry from its initial push toward sustainability to its current firm commitment. This week I posted an article about MGM Resorts completing an 8.3 MW dc solar photovoltaic system atop the Mandalay Convention Center—an astounding 26,000 panels. I could not imagine reporting on a project this size a decade ago. The project is just one example of the many green achievements of our industry.

Looking back at the first month of Green Lodging News, the website had 3,861 different visitors. Now the site averages close to 28,000 different visitors each month and has topped 30,000 on two different occasions. Our e-newsletter and Green Supplier Spotlight currently reaches 4,940. That number is sure to top 5,000 very soon. I have to thank each and every one of you for subscribing to and reading Green Lodging News on a regular basis. Also, a very big thank you to the hundreds of companies that have supported Green Lodging News with their advertising dollars over the years. Without those partnerships Green Lodging News would not exist. Be sure to tell those companies you learned about them here on Green Lodging News.

Content Available Nowhere Else

There have been many highlights over the past 10 years. I truly enjoy writing about new green products and technologies and meeting the many great people in our industry—either over the phone or in person. I take pride in the unique content posted on Green Lodging News. I know that many of the topics are covered nowhere else on the planet. It has been a joy speaking at the many green conferences and trade shows over the years and I hope to do that more in the coming years ahead.

For those of you who do not know, Green Lodging News is primarily a one-man operation so I need to rely on talent outside of my home office to keep Green Lodging News going and growing. This year, in partnership with Greenview, Green Lodging News launched the first Green Lodging Survey. If you have not yet completed it, please do so by August 31. In coming months I plan to begin work on a redesign of the Green Lodging News website. Please feel free to make suggestions about new additions. One thing that will not change is the valuable content you have come to rely on.

No job is always rosy and full of sunshine. If I had a dollar for every unanswered sales call, I would be retired by now. I am sure those of you in sales can relate to that one. That said, I am determined to motor on, for years more, because covering environmental news, given the state of our planet, is more important than ever.

Green Lodging Survey

The Green Lodging Survey, a joint effort of Green Lodging News and Greenview, is now ‘live’ and open through August 31. Be sure to complete the survey and have others do the same. The survey is geared toward those who own and operate lodging establishments anywhere in the world. Click here to access the survey.

Looking for Guest Columnists

Every two weeks Green Lodging News posts a new guest column on its website. (Click here for examples.) The guest column also appears in the weekly e-newsletter. Green Lodging News is currently in need of industry experts to contribute occasional guest columns. Experts may include consultants, architects, designers, suppliers and those who own or operate green lodging establishments. Columns may be articles that take a stance on a particular subject or be strictly educational in nature. Columnists benefit by having their photo included along with a one paragraph description of their company. Interested in writing a column? Contact Glenn Hasek, publisher and editor, at (813) 510-3868, or by e-mail at editor@greenlodgingnews.com.
