HOUSTON—Construction has started on the Hilton Garden Inn Houston Northwest—Americas Plaza, the first hotel in Texas scheduled to open with LEED Gold Certification, one of the highest environmental rankings bestowed on a building by the U.S. Green Building Council.

Located at Highway 290 and West Little York, the 172-room property is scheduled for opening in November 2012 and will be owned and managed by Houston-based New Horizons Hospitality. The company’s portfolio of owned and managed hotels includes two Hampton Inns and a Homewood Suites in northwest Houston and a Hilton Garden Inn located in The Woodlands.

As of October of this year, there were 100 LEED certified hotels in the United States, according to the U.S. Green Building Council which manages the green building certification program. Forty-one hotels have earned LEED Gold status.

“There continues to be a growing emphasis among companies, particularly those in the oil and gas sector, to choose hotel properties with the highest-possible environmental business practices,” says Aly Valiani, vice president of New Horizons Hospitality. “The LEED Gold status certainly makes a big statement to companies booking meetings and guestrooms for individual business travelers.”

The property will be the first Hilton Garden Inn to open on Highway 290 between 610 and the Sam Houston Tollway near major employers including Weatherford, National Oilwell/Varco, Cooper Cameron and others.

The project’s development team includes Mitchell Carlson Stone Architects and EBCO General Contractors.
