With the summer winding down it is time to make your reservations to attend this fall’s green conferences and trade shows. The first event on the calendar is the Mid-Atlantic Green Hospitality Conference from September 15 to 16 at Dover Downs Hotel & Casino in Dover, Del. The itinerary for the inaugural conference is still being assembled but many of the details can be found by clicking here. Highlights include a farm-to-fork dinner and many educational and networking opportunities with industry peers and suppliers.

The Lodging Green + Sustainability Conference & Expo is set for October 28 to 30 at Aria Las Vegas. This will be the second year for the event and is once again being organized by Lodging Magazine. Assisting this year will be EcoGreenHotel, NEWH Green Voice, and Green Lodging News. Almost 50 speakers will present on topics ranging from waste management to corporate responsibility to government funding for energy projects. There are three tracks for educational sessions: design, finance, and engineering. I will be moderating a session on “Sustainable Design for Guests.” There will be many opportunities to meet with suppliers in the Expo area.

New to the Lodging Green + Sustainability Conference & Expo this year is the presentation of Lodging Magazine Sustainability Awards in five categories: Individual Person; Individual Hotel Property; Hotel Brand; Hotel Supplier; and Other Corporate Entity (Hotel Group, Property Management Company, Design/Architecture/Engineering/GC Firm, Consulting Organization, Finance Organization, Association, or Other entity). Awards will be presented during a dinner on Wednesday, October 29. Award entries are currently being accepted.

Hospitality Green Returns to IHMRS

Green Lodging News will be taking on a prominent organizing role again this November at the International Hotel, Motel + Restaurant Show (IHMRS). The event, scheduled for November 8 to 11 at the Javits Center, will include five green panel discussions organized by Green Lodging News. The following are the topics: Crafting a Career in Sustainability in Hospitality & Tourism—Sustainability Trends in Hospitality Education; Hotel Energy Management All Stars; Gone Platinum! A First-Time Ever Gathering of Leaders of Three LEED Platinum Hotels; The Power of Green Certification—Updates from Lodging’s Leading Certifiers; and Waste Management Champions Making a Difference. I will moderate all but the session on LEED Platinum hotels. That one will be moderated by Dina Belon, Director of Hospitality Strategic Alliances & Development, Mindclick Global, Inc. The session is part of the NEWH Green Voice Conversation series. Additional green educational opportunities will also be available at IHMRS.

For the second year in a row the trade show floor will include a Hospitality Green Division. Other divisions to look for: Kitchen Design, Operations, Tabletop, and Technology. IHMRS will take place adjacent to the rapidly growing Boutique Design New York (November 9 to 10).

If you have questions about attending or exhibiting at any of the above events, I will gladly put you in touch with the right person. I can be reached at editor@greenlodgingnews.com, or by phone at (813) 510-3868.

Recycling-Related Question from a REIT Representative

Someone representing a REIT is doing research on recycling and would like to find examples of properties that share the money from the sale of recyclables with in-house staff. If your property fits into this category, send me a note and I will pass it along to the person conducting the research. I can be reached at editor@greenlodgingnews.com.

More on Multiple Chemical Sensitivity

I recently reported on Multiple Chemical Sensitivity. I received this note from a reader:

“Thank you so much for this article. I’ve had MCS for over 17 years now, and have slept on bathroom floors to get away from scented products. Febreze is bad because when you have MCS it will make you sick. I so want a safe vacation! It would be heaven if I could find a place with warm water and no pesticides or insecticides! I got very sick a few years ago when I tried to stay in a motel in Tahoe. I hope you write more about places for people like me to stay.”
