Greenbuild is the U.S. Green Building Council’s annual conference and trade show. USGBC just released its sustainability report from the 2021 event held at the San Diego Convention Center. Click here to view the report. It includes data on such things as waste diversion rate (80 percent), carbon impact per participant (413.27 pounds), and the amount of food donated (1,150 pounds).

Informa, the parent company that produces the Greenbuild International Conference + Expo, has seven sustainability objectives for Greenbuild:

1. Move toward a zero-waste event.
2. Empower stakeholders to drive change in their industries.
3. Improve sustainable sourcing and procurement.
4. Improve event overall social resilience.
5. Reduce event’s carbon footprint.
6. Positively impact communities.
7. Lead the event industry through the advancement of sustainable event management initiatives.

In the report, Informa dedicates an entire section to each of these seven objectives. For example, under the third objective, Informa explains how it worked with Centerplate at the San Diego Convention Center to source food locally. All the fresh food used in food prep for concession meals, plated lunches, and social events came within a 500-mile radius, with the majority coming from less than 250 miles away. The catering team was instrumental in ensuring that all service ware used for the event was 100 percent compostable or reusable, swapping out items to meet the event’s sourcing goals and accommodating its waste management plans.

The report features a page listing the event’s partners and looks ahead to Greenbuild in San Francisco. It will be held November 1 to 3 at the Moscone Center. The Center is a LEED Platinum facility.

The Greenbuild 2021 Sustainability Report is an excellent template for any event organizer planning to produce a sustainability report. Be sure to check it out.
