SAN FRANCISCO—Following an extensive review of the Axiom Hotel’s green initiatives, the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) has awarded the recently opened hotel the Silver level for its Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification.

LEED is the USGBC’s leading rating system for designing and constructing the world’s greenest, most energy efficient, and high performing buildings. It is a feature-oriented rating system that awards buildings points for satisfying specified green building criteria. The six major environmental categories of review include: Sustainable Sites, Water Efficiency, Energy and Atmosphere, Materials and Resources, Indoor Environmental Quality and Innovation, and Design. Certification levels of LEED green buildings are awarded based on the total number of points earned within each LEED category.

“We are thrilled with the design team’s ability to create such an environmentally responsible hotel for our guests and staff,” noted Garry Cox, the hotel’s General Manager. “The entire hotel team is extremely passionate about doing all they can to leave this world a better place for the next generation and earning the LEED Silver status is a giant step in the right direction.”

Water Stations on Every Guest Floor

The Axiom Hotel offers guests convenient filtered ice and water stations on every guest floor, providing guests with unlimited and complimentary fresh filtered water, instead of plastic bottled water for purchase. The hotel’s interiors were also outfitted with highly energy efficient LED lighting, an energy management system in each guest room with occupancy sensors that detect guest motion and adjust temperatures accordingly, and a comprehensive recycling program, which includes recycling bins in each guestroom. In addition, the tech-forward hotel installed smart elements in the guestrooms to help reduce its carbon footprint. These include dual-flush toilets to save water usage, as well as the deployment of Smart TVs for guest information guides and in-room dining menus to limit paper usage and waste.

“Axiom prides itself on being a property that looks to the future,” said Phil Tufano, Partner and Chief Operating Officer at Kokua Hospitality, the hotel’s management firm. “To ensure that its design and amenities support the needs of a modern traveler and sophisticated guest, we stay abreast of new and innovative ways to improve sustainability efforts, wherever possible.”

Additional environmentally responsible initiatives implemented at the Axiom Hotel include power-saving and long-lasting fiber optic cabling, instant hot water heaters instead of a traditional boiler system, and the use of environmentally preferred products and suppliers. The hotel continues to research and develop new ways to make its operations, services, and technology more sustainable and hopes to further improve its LEED standing and decrease its carbon footprint.
