SAO PAULO, BRAZIL—TripAdvisor announced the list of the first TripAdvisor GreenLeaders hotels in Brazil. Developed with the advice of the Rainforest Alliance and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), TripAdvisor GreenLeaders is one of the largest sustainability projects aimed at hotels and has awarded the GreenLeaders designation to more than 8,000 accommodations around the world and 52 now in Brazil, spread through 16 states and 41 cities. The states of Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paulo and Minas Gerais are the ones with the largest amount of sustainable accommodation with 11, nine and eight hotels respectively.

Now on TripAdvisor, anyone can filter the search for hotels in a particular national destination to easily find sustainable options. Each property is identified with a unique symbol and its page provides a detailed list of ecological practices of each accommodation. This information is divided into categories such as energy saving, conscious consumption of water and local social impact. Travelers can comment on these actions in their reviews and also report any information that was not consistent with their experience during the stay.

A survey conducted by TripAdvisor late last year revealed that 74 percent of Brazilians intend to make eco-friendly choices for their next holiday. However, despite the interest in this subject, 71 percent find it very difficult to get this information when planning a trip and more than half believe that the accommodations do not provide clear data on which green practices they implement.”

“More and more travellers around the world are placing importance on properties that implement eco-friendly practices,” said Ryan Dillon, Manager of Responsible Travel at TripAdvisor GreenLeaders. “With TripAdvisor GreenLeaders, we are pleased to help TripAdvisor’s 315 million travellers a month who use TripAdvisor by highlighting accommodations engaging in environmentally friendly practices.”

Four Levels of Recognition

In order to receive the TripAdvisor GreenLeaders badge, all the properties must fill out a form and meet certain requirements which are then evaluated by TripAdvisor partners. The score on this questionnaire also defines, in ascending order, what is the level of sustainability of each property—Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum.

“This certification is extremely important for the hotel, staff and guests because it shows all the hard work we have been doing over here,” says the Marketing Manager and person responsible for the green practices of Ouro Minas Palace Hotel, Monaline Alvarenga. Since its opening day, the Ouro Minas hotel has cared about the environment. In addition, this badge shows that you can keep up the quality of your services while being sustainable at the same time.”

Initially launched in the United States in April 2013, TripAdvisor GreenLeaders now includes sustainable accommodation options ranging from small independent properties to large multinational brands including Marriott International, Hilton Worldwide, Accor Hotels and Best Western. During 2014, the program was launched in 66 other markets such as the United Kingdom and Ireland, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Australia, New Zealand and Brazil.

“TripAdvisor is the largest travel site in the world,” said Ronald Sanabria, Vice President of Sustainable Tourism for Rainforest Alliance. “Working with them provides an excellent opportunity to contribute to the promotion of sustainable tourism at a global level—and to raise awareness on the efforts made by Rainforest Alliance certified tourism companies. In addition, we hope to encourage lodges to take action and reduce their environmental footprint.”
