Step Up & Help This Hurricane Season’s Many Victims

Will our industry pass one of its biggest tests ever? To show compassion to the victims of the storms currently hitting the United States one after the other? I hope it will. As mentioned on Green Lodging News this past week, Wynn Resorts donated $7.5 million to the victims of both Hurricane Harvey and Typhoon Hato. Clean the World Foundation and Guest Supply partnered to provide 60,000 hygiene kits and linens to Hurricane Harvey victims in Houston. In Texas, many hotels have lowered rates for storm victims. (Unfortunately, one hotel tripled its rates.)

All of our industry’s companies should step up and help. Harvey and Irma are impacting millions of people, including hotel employees. During Hurricane Harvey, the Director of Spa Services at the Omni Houston Hotel lost her life. Our prayers go out to her family and all of the storm victims.

As I am writing this column in Tampa—yes, I chose to stay—I wonder what the storm will be like for my family, my neighborhood, the greater Tampa area, for Orlando, for Miami—for all of Florida. We all know the importance of tourism in the Sunshine State. Florida welcomed 60 million visitors in the first half of 2017. An incredible number of jobs depend on folks visiting our state.

Panic Time?

Preparing for the storm has been an intense experience with stores running out of water, food items, and gas stations running out of fuel. People have been running out of gas along the highways while stuck in traffic trying to get out of the storm’s way. As sunny and tranquil as Florida can be, living here can be traumatic with the inevitability of hurricane strikes. And, the hurricanes are getting worse.

I will do my best to update my website during and following the storm. If you see no updates for a time, you will know that I have lost electricity and have no access to the Internet.

Thank you in advance for supporting the victims of Harvey, Irma, and all of the storms wreaking havoc this hurricane season.

How to Search on Our Website

Similar to other search engines you find online, a search using one word will produce articles with that word included. If you would like to search for something that is more than one word long—ozone laundry, for example—you will need to put quotation marks around the words or phrase. Ozone laundry would then be “ozone laundry” in the search.
