Stay Green Forum Set for February 17 at Hilton San Francisco Union Square

SAN FRANCISCO—The Hotel Council of San Francisco will hold its Stay Green Forum on Wednesday, February 17 from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. at the Hilton San Francisco Union Square. The full day of events will include property tours of the Hilton San Francisco Union Square (ultra-efficient laundry system and hydration stations), Hotel Nikko (combined heat and power system), and the Clift (container garden and rooftop bee hives.

The Stay Green Forum will kick off with a welcome from Debbie Raphael, Executive Director of the San Francisco Department of the Environment. Her presentation will be followed by the general session entitled, “What Guests Expect in a Sustainable Stay.” That panel discussion will include Caroline Beteta, President and CEO, Visit CA, Max Verstraete, V.P. of Sustainability and ADA Compliance, Hilton Worldwide, and Shonda Patton, Director of Event Operations, Oracle.

The general session will be followed by two breakout sessions. The first, “Incentivizing Sustainable Behavior in Staff and Guests,” will be moderated by Dawn Doane, Veritiv. Panelists will include: Reuben Schwartz, LEED AD BD+C, Principal, Energy Efficiency Programs, PG&E; Stefanie Medious, Regional Zero Waste, Outreach, and Education Manager, Recology Golden Gate; Shane Caldwell, Chief Engineer, InterContinental Mark Hopkins; and Guysell Geter, Director of Engineering, The Argonaut. The second breakout session, “Innovations in Water Conservation & Energy Efficiency,” will be moderated by David DaPonte, HKS Architects. Panelists will include Emilio Tenuta, V.P. of Corporate Sustainability, Ecolab; Peter White, Area Sales Manager, Energy Solutions, Johnson Controls; and Philip Greatrick, Director of Engineering, The Ritz-Carlton, San Francisco.

The keynote speaker during lunch will be Gavin Newsom, California Lieutenant Governor. Following his presentation there will be two more breakout sessions. The first, “Sustainable Hospitality By Design,” will be moderated by Mark Igou, SOM. Panelists will include: Ron Kowalski, LEED AP BD+C, Operations Manager, Swinerton Builders; Bill Worthen, LEED Fellow, Founding Principal, Urban Fabrick; and Leo Chow, Design Partner and Studio Head, SOM. The second breakout session, “Marketing Your Sustainability Story,” will be moderated by Donnie Oliveira, San Francisco Department of the Environment. Panelists will include: Michelle Heston, Regional Director of Marketing and Public Relations, The Fairmont San Francisco; Harry Hobbs, Area Director of Engineering, InterContinental San Francisco; Brian Gipson, Director of Sales and Marketing, Carmel Valley Ranch; and Kathleen Hennesey, LEED AP O+M, Sustainability Analyst, SMG Moscone Center.

The day will conclude with a Sustainable Wine Reception featuring Jackson Family Wines.
