EDMONTON, ALBERTA—The Shaw Conference Centre (SCC) officially unveiled its new Sustainability Wall, which showcases a vertical garden by local horticulture company Greenjeans. The garden adds color and visual interest to its location on the pedway level across from Hall D. In addition to the garden, the wall highlights a number of sustainable initiatives at the SCC and throughout the City of Edmonton.

“This unique showpiece helps tell our sustainability story,” said Cliff Higuchi, Vice President and General Manager of the Shaw Conference Centre. “The convention centre’s location allows us to connect a thriving downtown with the historic river valley, using our own sustainability efforts to share the Edmonton experience with the half million visitors who come through our building every year. The living wall is also a work of art and makes a powerful statement about who we are and what we value.”

In addition to the Sustainability Wall, SCC will be transforming its outdoor spaces through the implementation of a new permaculture initiative which recognizes the cultural and ecological significance of the SCC’s location on riverbank. The new landscaping will feature traditionally used and medicinal plans found in the natural environment.

Strong Connection to Environment

“Edmontonians take pride in living in a place that values the environment, and part of that has to do with the strong connection we have with our river valley,” said Mark Brostrom, director of the City of Edmonton’s Office of Environment. “Edmonton’s strategic plans speak to the importance of protecting our natural environment as it is a foundation for our social and economic wellbeing and the quality of life we enjoy.”

The new design features reflect SCC’s commitment to environmental stewardship, which is increasingly a priority for Edmontonians and those who are considering Edmonton as a location for their event.

SCC is a BOMA BESt (Best Environmental Standards) Level 2 certified facility with environmental best practices as part of everyday operations including a sustainability coordinator, an environment committee, Green Meetings tool kits for clients, food recovery programs, battery recycling stations and in-house vegetable and herb gardens.
